other horses in the pack train kicked up clouds of dust that hung in the still evening air “It’s just great to be out here with nature and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city” Scott said From a distance the group looked no different from any ordi- nary church or scout trip But for horse-campin- g Scott and five of his companions the trip was a bit more than ordinary are all blind Accompanied by guide Dan Ep-le- y and counselors Pete Barron and Jocelyn Parrish the six blind Washingtonians ages 14 through 21 spent two days on a adventure in the mountains north14-mi- le east of McCall The trip was just one of the many k activities planned for their on stay at Camp Watsamyus the shores of Payette Lake In addig tion to the voluntetwo-wee- horse-packin- er-run camp offers canoeing swimming backpacking and survival skills activities to blind youngsters For most it was not their first time on horseback but that did little to relieve anxiety as the trip was about to begin “Don’t be afraid of Streak he won’t bite” Epley said as he introduced one of the horses to its Ellena Samil of rider Spokane Ellena shyly reached out a hand to the animal running her fingers along its mane “These kids really listen to what you say they’ll do anything you tell them” Epley said tying a sleeping bag to another horse “You know when you take up a group from the YMCA or the Boy Scouts they question everything you tell them or they ignore you These kids do everything you say It makes things a lot easier” When everyone was settled into their saddles Epley gave a list of simple rules for the trail — ride single-fil- e stay together call out if in trouble — and checked again to make sure everyone was ready With a cry of “Heads up ponies!” Epley led the group into the mountains The trail which follows the ridge separating Payette Lake and Little Payette Lake was hot dusty and covered with overhanging The horses followed branches closely behind one another and Epley warned of obstacles ahead Barron bringing up the rear called out to those who might run into low tree limbs “Most of these kids have ridden before but some not for a long time” said Barron director of Camp Watsamyus “Warren has gone (on horse-ridin- g trips) the last four years and the first time he wasn’t able to ride alone — he had to ride double with a counselor The next year he rode alone part of the way and last year he did the whole trip riding single Now look at him — he rides like he really knows what he’s doing” The horses topped the ridge and entered a clearing offering a spectacular view in every direction Epley stopped the group and described the huge green valley to the south the mountains to the east and blue Payette Lake to the west Only two of the campers were unable to see any of the things Epley pointed to The others while legally blind were able to make out shades of light and dark and some details You know people think a blind person can’t see at all” said Doug Trimble 17 “But really only 20 percent of those who are legally blind can’t see anything Most blind people can see light and dark make out shapes and even recog- nize people” Trimble who has partial sight in one eye attends public high school in Vancouver Wash He said he plans to go to college and become a sportswriter Hospital Pledger — Richard M and McKay-De- e 1050 Sta-plem- an Robinett girl (AP)— Cecil D Andrus former Idaho governor and US Secretary of In- terior genial as ever is indeed happy these days He’s a private figure formerly a longtime lumberjack and insurance agent but is now boss of his own Cecil D Andrus Inc a consulting firm specializing in natural 'resources He views the future with bright expectation Andrus is keeping a low public profile but in any mention of future political possibilities he is a key topic of conversation particu-Tarl- y for governor and just maybe for US Senate Andrus just back from a y vacation in Canada is relaxed and happy to be back in his beloved Idaho which he fondly calls “the 10-da- pristine state” Right now his political activites are limited to serving as treasurer and finance chairman for his long- - time friend State Sen Mike Mitchwho is seeking the ell lieutenant governorship Andrus predicts that Gov John handilV Evans will be re-elect- ed y- “Records show that unless an incumbent is a crook evil or competent people of Idaho in- re-ele- ct Lhim” Andrus said “Governor 'Evans is none of these” Andrus said he is happy in the private sector after serving a four- year term as Interior Secretary six years as governor and eight years in the Idaho Senate Just turned 51 this month An- drus shied away from any future I political commitment but he didn’t ‘rule it out either He noted that Evans has said this will be the last time he will seek re- - election Andrus commented “It is too early for me to make any political plans now I’ve had my personal enjoyment in every position I’ve ever had but I must say being Idaho governor was one of the most rewarding Of course I’m looking at this (governorship) but I’ve made no decision I’m not ruling out anything” Andrus said he likes his own business but he is not keen on frequent travel such as going to New York City twice a month and other distant points in the nation He is involved in natural gas and coal contracts dealing mostly in the area of natural resources and environmental concerns stint Referring to his four-yeaas Interior Secretary he said “It was an honor to have had an opportunity of being a member of the President’s cabinet” Andrus was rated as perhaps the most popular member of President Carter’s cabinet but he always kept his love for Idaho “I enjoy the lifestyle in Idaho” he said “I like the people in Idaho That is where I want to live” Voting records show Andrus was one of the most popular of Idaho governors In the 1974 election Andrus drew 72 percent majority against Republican Lt Gov Jack Murphy winning ever county except Lemhi r All three of his daughters are now married the last one just recently He and his wife Carol are now without any of their children for the first time Most political strategists believe Andrus will seek
