staid old journal of comme commerce me of stew york believes there is little need for alarm that the corres 1 i pon po dents in the south are either elther either elther imposed upon by their informants ia or they designedly exaggerate the state of afna afra affairs irs as the same things have been baen reported for the last nine years and yet the war of races seems as far onn oft as ever but other journals take an opposite view the cleveland plain dealer takes this view are wo we to have a war of races such rc a conflict has been predicted ever over since the inauguration of congressional reconstruction in the eiith lodth but the prediction has never be been an fulfilled entirely lately however here there have been numerous premonitions of such a war at different places in arkansas louisiana tennessee mississippi south carolina and georgia bloo bloody y encounters have recently taken place between the whites and blacks politics does not sot seem to be an influence in this bad blood th the ewhite white men opposed to the negroes and frequently the victims of their rage and savagery are as often republicans as democrats A race hatred pure and simple seems to be at the bottom of the whole trouble in some portions of the ille south there are organizations or of white men pledged t to 0 operate e 6 in every possible way agal agai against t the negro nezro socially ant and politically cammi caffi both oth republicans and democrats belong to these organizations now while such a state of things is to be heartily reprehended reprehend ed it is idle to deny that the white people or of the south have not been in in a large degree provoked to a hostile attitude against the the reckless and malignant radicals who invented the scheme or reconstruction st were largely impelled by a desire to break the spirit and strength of the southern whites this they expected to accomplish bya by A cunning trick of dis franchesi ment which tied the hands of every intelligent white southerner and handed him and his f fellows over to the subjection of black field hands as ignorant as the mules of the cane and cotton fields and la a parcel of vile political hoodlums from the north who soon became known the world over as carpet asa result of this sickening and unnatural combination the people of ef many portions of the south have been subjected d to con eon confiscation robbery and outrage in every conceivable cei vable form so that in most cases the bloody enmity to the begio race which we now see results from sheer sheen desperation the conviction too that the social and political wrongs or of the south have been imposed upon her people by the north for tor the deliberate purpose of crushing them has a great deal to do towards intensifying their bitterness following the attorney general is daily receiving communications showing that there isa is a desperate effort in some portions of the southern states to inaugurate a war of races among others to the
