committee consisting chiefly of the reason why he be declined to testify and of promises to testify at the call cali of the committee the committee have called him hird three times with the results stated the committee call attention to the fact that the letter of tilton on which the invest investigation 0 atlon was based charged no dafin definite ite ito of fence but only made vague 0 allusion to an offense offence of some s sort ort said to have been commit ted tod by mr beecher against mr tilton and for whit h be lle had apologised apologized therefore the question before the committee was what offense if any beecher had committed against tilton the comm committee t atee then reiterate the fact of tilton appearing before them and definitely stating staling the charge alluded to in the dr bacon letter as thae of adultery with mrs at various times and places during 1863 to 1870 they call attention to the tile fact that the offense odne ofie nse as first alleged by tilton was improper in solicitation by beecher to toc mrs jirs tilton but as time passed and purposes matured I 1 this charge passed and matured into another form and sub gub substance stance the committee then recite the facts deducted from the evidence before them of beecher and til tona tons intimacy of their friendship while they were together editing edit 1 19 the independent sho showing allu that t the h e former was the latter to visit his house and to do his editorial work there and that in every way lie he understood and approved of the friendly relation existing between Beech erard mrs mm tilton they find that the friendly relations between tilton and beecher continued until i December Decem berTO when rii ril tons conduct on orl the independent having injured the tile paper especially ally in the west lie he having come to deny the inspiration of the scriptures and the divinity of christ and his social views having about this time also undergone a radical change in the direction of free love this change clia cila lige tige in her ller husbands character affected mrs tilton iton itom itoh deeply and being a very religious woman she naturally sought lier ller pastor for counsel and sympathy and she set forth in strong terms the suffering tiring that her husbands husband course was causing her it now appears that during these years mrs tilton became strongly attached to mr beecher and 0 in july 1870 confessed to her husband an overshadowing af for her pastor on 0 n 0 or r abo about u t dec 70 mrs tilton ti I 1 to n left her ller husband going with her children to her her llen mothers house she summered suffered ered a miscarriage the day after her return on the which resulted in aberl a serious illness continuing until after the of january the committee then state that early in december llowen gave tilton noti notice eeor of his discharge from the editorship or of the I 1 independent nde pendent that on or about the of december bowen made a contract with tilton by which ho he was wil s to be editor of the brooklyn union and chief contributor to the independent for five years but bowen afterwards heard such stories of Til tons immoralities as alarmed him and led to au an interview 1 himself self seif tilton and oliver juhn Juhu stal stai at bowens bowena house houie at thim interview tilton sought to detain his place and will by offering tb join bowen rowen in an attack on baecher Ee Ea echer the interview vaulted in a lestr let iet tr which tilton wrote and signed on the of december demanding that beecher leave the plymouth and brooklyn the tho report stays that bowen delivered this note and that beecher expressed astonishment at its ita contents bowen derided it and told beecher why he had reduced tilton from the editorship of the independent and said he doubted whether he ought to re tain him as editor of tho the union beecher thought ho he ought not and spoke strongly in re regard ard to the threatening letter of Til tons bowen declared that if trouble came of it he would stand by beecher this conversation bowen carried to tilton who thereupon extorted from his sick wife charges against beecher of having made her improper prepositions the committee then give a report the substance of which has ha s already been published of Be echers interview with tilton at Moul moui tons solicitation and at his house and of the charges brought by tilton against beecher and the production of the confession or of mrs sirs T the amazement of beecher at finding the woman whom he had thought to be a type of moral goodness subscribing to such an atrocious story the night visit to mrs Tilt Til tons tona bedside the written retraction giver eleto to beecher by her and the subsequent procuring of this document from beecher by Moul tons specious arguments and the displaying of a 0 pistol though lie he made no distinct threat the committee here express great regret that at this juncture j unc une moulton was not handed over to the police and thus saved much subsequent trouble troubie the committee say that echers betchers Be distress at the situation was boundless he saw the peril of being even falsely accused lie he blamed himself for much that had occurred he could not tell how much of impending trouble could be attributed to nis bis mrs Til I 1 tons t 0 ns undue affection fer for flim liim w which ll 11 ac h as it was his hla duty he re while in the morbid condition of mind produced by these distressing difficulties moulton again called on him his matl mafi manner hier fier was vas kind and conciliatory he hep ver to elleve believe that that beecher had been the cause of downfall that he had leagued with bowen against him and ard by his advice come near destroying Tilton family beecher er pressed expressed many strong regrets at the misfortunes of that family mo moulton t u caught up some of ef these expressions pres pre lobs lohs and wrote them down saying that if tilton could see them there would be no trouble in pro t euring a reconciliation this paper which is dated january 1871 was In trusted by mr nin beecher to Moul moui tons keeping without reading it nor was it read to him this paper sometimes called the apology and sometimes the confession is ia in no proper sense mr beechers becchers Bee Be echers chers production d ora or a correct report of what he said for instance no man will believe that beecher said ici III 1 I humble myself before him tilton asi asa aa I 1 do before my god the sent sentence erice brice her forgiveness I 1 have mr nir beecher declares was not used nor the semblance semb Jance of it pausing ril rii using here a very important question arises in this connection viz victo to what does the apology refer it declares mrs tilton guiltless and yet til tit tilton ton tou says 1 it t refers to adultery which beecher beechen denies the committee then proceed to take up the evidence to show that the original charge was improper advances and that as time passed and the conspiracy deepened it was enlarged i into adultery the importance rlee rice of this is they say apparent because ir if the charge has been so ho changed then tilen both tilton tl iton and moulton are conspirator sand and convicted of a vile fraud which necessarily ends endi their influence fluence lif in this controversy the committee proceed to argue at length from the evidence already published that this is a fact and declare that the retraction and a all ali I 1 subsequent quent conversation acts and letters of the various persons directly cou concerned in dealing with the scandal are consistent with this view and with no other othen the committee cite the true story written by tilton as containing the facts of the alleged offense of beecher and which they say he was in the habit of reading to newspaper men and others as making no charge except that of improper or impure proposals by beecher to mrs tilton and they quote the testimony of Bee beechel chei harmon Har monand and others to prove this statement beecher testifies that tilton read this true story to him on a ferry boat one day and anil that afterwards lie he went to miltona Til tons tona house and a conversation was had which lasted till midnight 3 and during all this time not a word was said or hinted at by tilton that he believed beecher cherhat had committed adultery but c en n the cont contrary he asserted his unshaken confidence in ills his winos winoa purity and cb en only of the improper solicitations citations soli the committee say it is believed that no case of adultery on record can be produced where an injured husband upon learning of his cifes infidelity kept the fact to himself for six montbrand month sand saud then after a private complaint to the offending party received and accepted an apology for the of fence and declared it forgiven and this followed bya by a restoration atlon of the courtesies of friendship the committee also argue that hat moulton had in his mind no other offense than improper overtures by beecher and he did not believe or understand blat it was adultery they quote the expression in his letter to beecher you can stand if the whole case were published tomorrow to morrow and they deride the idea that he could write thus knowing knowin that there was adultery in the caig caie case ease and rid they conclude this branch of the case by branding the performance as a fraud which ought to end all controversy tro versy as to the innocence of mr beecher the committee then go on to speak of Moul tons connection with the affair in the character of a mutual friend and admit that he obtained a strong hold upon bee chers mind by ids his plau piau sabio manner and his apparently sincere desire to servo serve him beecher knew that the accusation though false would if it became public cause a great scandal and bavin having an immense deal of labor on his is hands he entrusted to moulton the task of keeping this false accusation from the public the strong language and tenor of Be beechert Bee echers ehens letters to moulton in reference to the matter are freely admitted by the they say it must be remembered that using strong word sand emotional expressions is characteristic of beecher but they say there is not a word or an act of big however ill |
