there as ius a representative of beaver county he faford greeley and brown but he be had no credentials or certificate because the call for the meeting bad been issued too late to obtain it I 1 the on organization and order of business mr akers said that the credentials of a number of delegates to the convention were signed by telegraph and they had bad duplicates from corinne one of them sending eleven men and the other five of course the eleven names had bad to be rejected and they took the others he moved however ho wever that all delegates accredited to the convention either by telegraph or letter be admitted and that they east cast the number of votes the county was entitled to and decide d amongst themselves how they should be cast the motion was adopted the committee on permanent organization reported general barnum president of the convention jacobs and ren ken kenny presidente presidents C OW W penrose and vve wis wig Lapham Secretaries and mr C B barstow Bar stoy sergeant at arms with the following order of business the ratification of the cincinnati platform and the endorsement of horace greeley and B gratz brown and 2nd the nomination of a delegate to congress for the territory of utah col akers offered the following resolutions lut ions which were adopted unanimously we W e the representatives of the democrats and liberal republicans of utah in convention assembled do hereby declare birst that we adopt the declaration of political principles enunciated hy by the cincinnati and baltimore national conventions and favor the election of horace greeley and B gratz brown to the offices of president and vice prest pleat dent of the united states second that the best inte lute interests rests of utah require that its citizens should array themselves under the banners bannen of the great political parties of the country that the formation or of political ponti cai cal organizations upon the basis of differences in religious belief is opposed to the genius of our republican publican re system i of government and only tends to produce bitterness of feeling and strife among citizens while business is injured and industrial industrial development retarded third that in utah as in ih the nation ours is the party of concilla conciliation tiou tion peace and progress and that we condemn the unwise policy of the present administration towards the people of this territory that we recognize th mhd tact fact that the public sentiment of the nation and our own best interests alike require that domestic institutions and local government here should be to conform with those of att nit other Ame american communities but that this end may best beat be achieved by the exercise of that policy pollet of justice toleration and magnanimity t 11 i which our ouy national party organization is elvery every where pledged the nomination of a Dp delegate legate to con gress gresa was the next business the following presentation being baini made by col akers mr president I 1 wish to present to this convention as candida candidate t e for delegate to congress the niame dame of mr J P page he is a young and active man and a inan man of capacity and a as far as time will pe permit r mit will devote himself to a thorough canvass of the territory mr majors seconded the nomination of mr page mr M at mayer who from the commencement of the dinga dings hud had constituted himself chief chief cook and bottle washer of the convention and had rendered himself ridiculous by his fussy officiousness moved that the nomination mi nation be made by acclamation before the above motion was put mr HJ R J faust put in nomination mr geo Q cannon which was seconded by mr 0 W penrose as f hows flows I 1 rise to second the motion of mr faust and I 1 would like ilke to make a remark or two I 1 second the motion of mr faust on the ground that mr can non is a gentleman of ability and un der stands standa the wants and feelings of the thi great bulk of the people of utah territory P and is in ev every evers r way qualified to 6 represent them in ey Cn congress gress according to the dae limited opportunity afforded him hlin as I 1 am aware that many gentlemen present have some objections to supporting mr Cannon who has already been nominated by what is ia called the peoples party in utah they would rather nomi nominate nater an independent candidate they object to mr nir cannon because he was nominated by what they call the church party and they have objections to maxwell because he was wab nominated by the red eyreal pirty P irav the democrats at baltimore waived trie thre the objections they had to mr greeley he be having received the nomination at cincinnati cin nati on the grounds anat there was no chance of success if they nominated a straight out democrat mr gr greeley was rather a hard pill for many of them to swallow but they found after they had bad voted for him that he agreed pretty well with themas a democrat I 1 am in favor of taking a similar course to that adopted at baltimore and accept mr cannon who was nominated here in the tabernacle llis ilis it is true that many present may object to him because he is a member of the mormon church but I 1 think when we geathe get the real feelings of a majority of the gentlemen present who have a right to vote thab that this objection will be found to be trifling no objection to mr cannon as a gentleman no objection to his personal character none to him on the score of ability abi I 1 think then that the fact of him being a mormon ought to have no weight on our minds As democrats we do not believe in entering upon political warfare on religious grou grounds I 1 think that if we adopt the nomination made in the tabernacle and accept mr cannon not because he was nominated there but because he is a man qualified to represent ua as aa a people ina inthis this thih territory better than any other candidate that can be put in the field we shall be taking a wise course what chance have we to elect an inde pendant candidate what chance have we to elect a strictly democratic candidate suppose we put one in the tho field can we elect him I 1 sa say y no I 1 byn ayd pretty well acquainted with the feelings fee linga of the gread great mass of thep they the people eople in this thib territory and I 1 can tell this convention today to day that for any other candidate than mr cannon they can count on but very few ily ihl mormon votes they will go solid for mr cannon it is true that the great bulk of the people of utah believe in the principles of democracy although they have not been actively engaged with the great democratic party of the country they have not been allied with either of the great political parties they have held aloot from them and they have had haet their reasons for so doing they have received no favors favora from either arty and although we ve hold to democratic principles yet we have mot not been identified with the party no w that more interest is being taken throughout the country in the principles of democracy organ I 1 ons are being effected in different parts of utah for as I 1 said the great bulk of the people are democratic in principle if they havo not hitherto been connected with the party parly as an organization they favor the election of mr cannon because he will represent all the interests of the territory mr cannon la ia a greeley and brown man he favors theli their election as we do and his principles pes ples are identical with ours and I 1 am satisfied that the great bulk of the people will go for him and if we nominate any other candidate it will be a fizzle and 4 a failure and I 1 am in favor of 0 this convention eu endorsing dorsing his nomination as agthe the baltimore convention accepted the nomination of greeley and brown by the cincinnati convention I 1 think we shail shall accomplish nothing and all oui our labor will go for naught if we accept another candidate therefore I 1 see second nd with great cordiality the motion of mr hir faust that george Q cannonie Cannon be nominated by this convention as delegate to congress mr arens I 1 wish to ask the gentleman who has just juat taken his seat whether he can in iii behalf of mr din cannon accept the platform adopted by this convention MR MB PENROSE in answer to that I 1 have to say bay that I 1 am not authorized to speak in any way whatever for mr cannon arb MR arp AKERS can mr faust give us any pledge as aa to mr cannon accepting the platform we have read here toda today to da day I 1 asil ask the question for the reason that I 1 doubt very much whether mr hir cannon cannou would accept the platform that this convention has adopted and I 1 believe unanimously ani and irrevocably I 1 will read the last clause of it having done so mr A proceeded now as aa the name of mr cannon iano lanh been presented to thia this ConVen convention tion ilon I 1 take it for granted that the person presenting the name if he expects to get gel any votes for his candidate can vouch for him being ready to endorse the policy which we nuno auno announce unco if mr cannon Is ia ready to plant himself on this platform I 1 am ready to withdraw my nomination and give him my vote I 1 think this ought to end the matter if he be cannot be pledged as supporting our platform of course we cannot support him MR nip FAUST inasmuch as I 1 have been called upon by a member of this thia convention to pledge mr cannon I 1 if I 1 remain silent it would simply say that I 1 could not pledge him I 1 can pledge mr nir cannon to anything that has been written there I 1 have been beon acquainted with him for twelve years and have never known him to utter anything contrary to the principles of democracy he of course accepts the nomination of greeley and brown as we ali all do not from choice but simply as a matter that we can not get over and it atia Is the best that can be done under the circumstances As far as mr cannon is concerned he hag bag endorsed the nomination of greeley and brown in ft a public speech from the balcony of this room and hib hie whole life nas has shown that his principles are democratic I 1 am not afraid to pledge him to anything of that kind it matters not what his religion is I 1 do not know what mr pages religion is and I 1 do not propose to question it I 1 do not prop propose to drag re religion I 1 igdon into this caucus I 1 am not aware that the democratic p pirty arty take into account what a mans religion I 1 if their principle is to place every religion on an equal footing and to let a man worship god as aa he pleases hear hear theae thead are my sentiments today and have havo been from my youth when I 1 lived in missouri and nud these gentlemen are the sentiments of george Q cannon mr mayer mayor said as mr faust had pledged mr cannons acceptance of the platform and mr akers had agreed to withdraw his candidate he be Nl mayer blayer ayer desired to place the name of james P page before the convention as aa candidate for delegate to Cong congress ress teSS the motion was not seconded and the chair announced that there was nothing before the convention but to proceed to ballot bailot balloting pg for the daie Dale delegate gater A motion to that effect was carried and the balloting commenced As one after another of the counties voted going either sold or a mi bority for mr dir cannon the uneasiness of secretary mayer for his candidate became apparent to all and when the vote of sanpete announced solid for mr cannon wag was given by mr D mckenzie who had been chosen to act proxy for the county and his credentials accepted poor mayers mayors spleen could no longer be restrained and in a very authoritative and ungentlemanly manner he be expressed his doubt whether mr me kenzle kenzie ever lived in sanpete San pete said that he ought to be thankful that he bad a place in a democratic convention and that the delegates present ought to cast their individual votes only mr replied say saying ing he considered mr mayers mayors remarks entirely out of order as his credentials had been accepted by the committee on credentials of which that gentl gentleman eman emun was wab himself a member the chairman gen barnum ren derad further farther reply from mr mckenzie Mo kenzie Kenzle unnecessary by saying that the convention had been called with the understanding der standing that the delegates present representing the several counties should cast as many votes as the counties cast in the territorial errit orial convention the balloting was then proceeded ith when it came to the vote for foe salt bait lake county col akers said I 1 am instructed by the delegat delegation loii from salt lake county to cast the entire vote of the delegation for mr J P page if I 1 may be permitted in an informal way I 1 would like to explain the position tn in which I 1 am now placed I 1 stated that if mr george Q cannon was willing to accept the platform which thia thib body adopted by unanimous vote I 1 would support him and I 1 repeat that pledge dow now if mr cannon will accept this platform I 1 am urn ready to support him and I 1 would like to state further that as the gentleman vv who ho placed mr cannon in nomination has given this convoy convention tion a pledge on the part of mr cannon that he be would adopt the platform I 1 wish it understood that he goes jorth forth to the countr country as the candidate of this convention |
