Show R REMARKS r edi edl ni A R Is by arst DANIEL manlel 11 WELLS bowery G S L l april 6 03 1503 1563 REPORTED BY G 3 D WATT J heie here we want to build a tabernacle to e the at our general conferences and anil religious zelig lous loua worship that wi I 1 comfortably seat some ten people and oter there we want to build a temple these two items I 1 wish to 10 call your attention to today to day we have organized the different districts throughout the territory so that fifty teams can be at work for the temple temples hauling granite rock from big and little Cotton cottonwoods woods there has been some hauling done rione but bat I 1 wish to suggest a little amendment on our present oe operations rations and plans touching this part of the work westall we shall bhail want the same bame number ot of teams this beason season we have never had bad as many as was designed in the first place which was fifty at any one time lime it if we could have eten even ex en twenty five or thirty teams constantly at work they would keep the stonecutters stone cutters employed there was a difficulty last season beason n about feed for the animals engaged on this work but we are prepared to teed bay this year but grain must be furnished by the wards I 1 wish to say a word in regard to the teamsters send men to drive tile tiie teams and not boys men who will have some interest in the work worn they thy are sent to do men who will not gell cell the grain sent to feed the teams to buy whisky with men who mho will not like bike the their ir teams to haul baul wood with instead of rock reck for the temple tempie let the teamsters be fitted out with at least one spare shirt that they may not cot be placed under the of wearing one ne shirt five or six weeks and then leave the work to go home il it they are not supplied with more diore this same remark will apply to shoes also either send men that do not use tobacco or send them with a supply that fiet frey may way not come to me arid tell me they will have to leave the work ork if they are n 1 supplied with tobacco some of tile the bishops berst sent word if I 1 would find the men from their wards tobacco they would pay for it which they have not rot done and yuu may expect that in the future we shall not find them in this article we expect these things to be found them and men bent sent who will take of heir acir teams and wagons it is a heavy tax upon us to repair unavoidable breakages break ages this we expect to do we lve have a pretty good road to the rock and it men w will de be careful cateral in the management of their teams they need not break wagons b as much as they have on the heel ef the teams going down to the states for the poor we want the teams ready for tor the ha hauling tiling of rock I 1 will make a suggestion here that the city be divided into ten U working wards each ward to pay its tithing labor punctually every tenth day that we may have all the common labor we need on labor tithing tit bing and not be he placed under the necessity of hireling labor with available means this tithing labor can be done by the people in this city but you say the hauling of rock and sen sending dirig teams to the states takes up all the tithing kitbing labor we owe if this be so you may call the haulot g of the rock and teams going to the states a flee f iee ice will offering it you please I 1 care riot ilot bow you fix it I 1 know there is a great portion of the community who care not much which way it applies those who mho have t ams are the ones supply both the hauling of rock for the temple and going to the 8 ates A great mass or of the people do not do any labor of this kind let the bishops in each ward look to it and hind find hild bild out who in their wards do not pay labor tithing iii in sending teams to the states we want ape the common labor on the block this season beason to excavate to attend masons and do a variety of work that is necessary to be accomplished for the building of our contemplated taberna ce let there be an organization of the people in order to bring a portion of 0 that labor on this block the labor ti tithing thino of mechanics cannot lie tie settled by bending sending a eperson person to work at a tol toi iollar and a half a day if the bishop understands his business all our tradesmen make more core than a dollar and a half a day they should pay what their tenth daya labor is worth the shoe makers can furnish boots and shoes shoeb bich which abich can be used to a good advantage if there la Is an objection raised to paying payin the material on labor kitbing tit bing it can be cre credited cited on their property tithing we would not wish our tradesmen to leave their shops to work out cut theli their labor tithing in common labor with the shovel the pick etc for they would not earn as much asa asa common laborer would who daily follows this kind of labor we want them then to pay their tithing in the kind of labor they are consta constantly employed at and the products of this we can piare place to an excellent use common labor is ig more 1 plentiful lenti ful than mechanical le al labor 1 I havo have bean parti ular clarn ln noticing tb ma ter great abuses are springing up among ug us for want of proper attention log iod to the business of tithing 2 labor upon the public sometimes men are found fault with because they the work they do not for instance cut the stone to line and do not improve in their work as much aa as they should it any thing is said to those persons they feel and as though they did not care whether they continued to work or not on the public works I 1 for say they my work is as asgood good as the pay 1 2 perhaps you do not know k ow what kind of pay you get what does docs the tithing office pay to the bands on the public works it pays money it pays paya clothing it pays good flour and plenty of it all tb that a t the hands need it pays vegetables of every kind that is raised in these mountains it pays molasses chickens eggs butter beet beef and pork sime some hay and wood I 1 wish to ask if this is not gord got goi d pay and especially A hen you consider that the public hands bands get all their wages an i more too for it in many instances ib they e y are behind on the books they get all they earn and more unless they are more diligent than some generally are because we pay high wages these are facts that cannot be truthfully denied men alen who work ork on the public works should be satisfied and contented arid and give their best services and try to improve and do the best they can a good many do this there is no place in the territory that pays better belter pay and better wages than is I 1 aid to the hands that work on the public works upon an average it if they can bett r themselves why do they the Y not no t do lla iia some would quickly leave the public e works in the best season of the year tor for a few dollars in ils money and in the winter when hen employment is scarce elsewhere return to tle ute public works this is not righteous before god men who do 1 thiis do not do their duty as saints if any velson vereon can do better than 0 to o te a latter day saint and abide the cou counsels neis nels given to them why do they not do it if there is more peace and comfort arid and salvation in the world than among the saints why did they not stay in the world and it if after they come here tu th y think they can enjoy themselves bet er somewhere else why do they not go thre there instead of stai stay staring staying ing here as grumblers grumbl ers in the kingdom af pf of gou go T tae a kingdom of god is as independent zut of all such men as the lord himself and it will be built up whether they assist in the work or not I 1 speak thus plainly that you may know how we feel about such things and that 5 3 oil ou may realize that you are equally interested in the building up of the kingdom of god as I 1 am oras eras or as any body else is it is as nohh mu h your duty to come here and spend your time as it is mine whether you get anything for it or not I 1 am no more interested in building up the temple than any other latter day saint is I 1 am no more interested in building bui loing anew a new tabernacle than y youage you 01 are e it is no more the business of the first presidency or twelve apostles han than ban it is yours this however may need qualification some feel a slothful interest in it that we do not have it is as much your duty as ours and I 1 expect we can do as well without it as you can cars we however I 1 expect to accomplish this work whether you aid us or not but we call upon the people in this sense it is your privilege to aid us its if you feel willing to do so we expect i ou on to do as VOU you shall shail be directed and abide the law you have enlisted to obey this is your privilege we expect yu yuu wil guide your labors according to the rule laid down far for you to follow IV we e wish to proceed with this labor immediately upon the close of this conference let he be men who bo seek labor seek it not so particularly for individual ag rand bement as f or the interest of the kingdom ot of god this work will be aa an equal benefit to all ail allaf if we will be diligent and contented 1 here is no job men ca can be ene eng engaged raged reged in that will pay half as well those who will cling to the faith and work on faithfully diligently and humbly will be the best off lotfin in the end I 1 do not care what indic inducement ement is offered to them there Is no enterprise ter prise so remunerative as the great enter prie in which we are engaged or half BO so profitable though we may not realize all things we desire or need at the present moment as fully as we would like look at the faithful laborer who is putting forth his hand in building up the kin kingdom edorn adorn of ol god even if it is connected with bringing the rocks from the quarry lumber and timber from the mountains etc that soul has peace and quiet within though in temporal matters comparatively destitute but in this country no person need suffer for the he common necessaries of life it is not so in distant nations where many of us no came from remember the appeals that are made to us tor for assistance for starvation has entered their dwellings it is not so here do we realize the blessings ble singa we imo e enjoy y in contrast with those of our brethren in distant t tant countries while we are doing all we can to aid themi themo iet let lit us remember not to slacken our bands in endeavoring to build up the kingdom of god in answering to the calls made u upon ion kon pon us its here no person can release us as from the duties that devolve upon us as individuals a we each of us should Bh shoulder our 1 own responsibilities and am rejoice to embrace t the be privilege of performing f the duties devo devolving ving virg upon us to do good in the chu ch and kingdom of god in the last days I 1 ihl Ibi his alsan aisan is an inestimable privilege viege which once neglected may never again return no person should lose the op opportunity ort unity of doine doing good if they do they will be sorry afterwards look back upon your own history and experience in the church and kingdom of god and point out a single duty that has been manfully and rig righteously performed that does not to this day bring to you a feeling of great satisfaction and gratitude to the almighty that you were dere call d upon to perform that duty and you are glad that you did perform it faithfully before your god and your brethren I 1 do not believe there is ib a single that has ever performed a single duty in the chef church ch ard arid kingdom of god but what is grateful to the almighty that they had strength and power and ability to perform that duty the theis so let it be in the future whenever we are aret called upon to perform a duty let us hasten to perform it with a free and glad heart and etli a ready hand doing it as it should be done with all the wisdom ability and power that we can bring to bear on it feeling grateful to the almighty for the leg and we shall have joy and rejoicing before the heavens this is the true light in which ue u e douht to look at this matter there is a great labor before this people it is a life time wor work k and then it will be taken up by those thosa who wi wiil II 11 follow after us who to develop the things which the almighty is try if ig g to establish upon the earth the work of the salv atio bof our dead and the great millennium trill benium the work we are now doenz is preparatory to that work and that work is preparatory to another that shall follow after we will bifid a new nevit tabernacle of sufficient lelent dimensions to accommodate the people much better than they can be at present and the time probably is not far distant when vohen we may commence to ad adain admin minser fo to our dead but the dutes of tod today to d day ay and all the work find and labor we are called upon to perform is preparatory to son ething else if we perform this work faithfully it will tel in its place in the due season and time of the lord then let us be faithful and ard and never neglect the opportunity of doing good when presented to us its be it ever FO so small email in our es there is nothing so small but what a necessary when we are told to do it by those who preside over us small smail things reach to great reat things lings ti we cannot baptize for the dm dead without a font and we cannot zet t the stone to build it of without going 21 to the stone quarries to get it it looks a small thing to quarry ro k and to pick up the pebbles and cobble rock or to take the spade and go end labor a sit s u gle days work but those small matters form together a grand whole in bringing r 6 to pass the great purposes we are anticipating will come to pass in the lords due time then let us its listen to and respond to the calls made u upon p on us by our bishops by our presidents by those who are appointed to direct and govern and control and shape our labor it id the business of this people to build up this kingdom in any channel and direction in which A hey bey hey bey are caled c to labor let us abide these teachings and call callip for in this we can attain an exa exaltation tation in the presence of our father in heaven let us seek to be te exalted therein and enjoy eternal lives in the mansions of the blessed this is is my sermon bermon forto for today to day may blay god help us to do these things is my prayer in the name of jesus amen deuced by disease and sickness to the last extremity of human endurance it was under such circumstances as these that the biet blet brethren bren started forth on their mission to england when they had gone a few miles they wera wet 11 met by an old friend who mho on seeing their sick tick and wan condition inquired who had bad been robbing the burying ground these are circumstances which have passed into history ivban what is cur condition now we can bear occasionally from our brethren in england many of them who have been long ylare years yearb in the church saying to their children I 1 will give you a little bit to eat but when you get to zion you can have as much as you want but now you must make this little do in the cotton spinning districts in great britain there are thousands of such cases amold persons belonging to this chuch they are reduced to the last extremity of want in consequence ot of the great revolution in america we should not send E ders there to beg of them a division of their scanty pittance or to solicit ad in paying their passage back again to amelica america Amei amel ica I 1 or to give them something to carry home to their families not at all god has baa given us possession of tbs abs goodly land the labors of the brethren and the blessing of god have caused it to bud and blossom as the rose where desolation dwelt now is abode of plenty we are under no necessity of sending forth the elders of |
