April 29 and 30, close to 1,200 students from Utah high schools and colleges showed their technical and computer savvy at the sixth annual Multimedia Festival and Technology Fair at Utah Valley State College. Many technical students showcased their woodworking, metal shaping and drafting projects, while others competed in the realms of digital media, Web page construction and graphic design. The Multimedia Festival hosted by the UVSC School of Computer Sciences and Engineering, featured the work of nearly 800 local high schoolers. The festival was a venue for multimedia students to present their finest work in a competitive atmosphere. Some noteworthy multimedia and film projects from local students included a family tree CD ROM compilation, an education DVD on spiders and a Dial America advertising commercial, slated to run in the San Diego market. Winners were given free software, trophies and recognition to take back to their home schools. Steven Johnson, assistant dean for the School of Technology, Trades and Industry, explained that the Technology Fair was broken into a project display portion and a technical competition. Projects displayed included woodworking, like chests of drawers desks and a grandfather clock; metal welding, including large metal trailers; and customized automobiles. Competitions dealt with welding, construction, cabinetry, drafting an: automotive design. Best of Snow winners during the Technology Fair competition were offered n scholarships to attend UVSC. All participants received a first, second or third place ribbon, as they were judged individually, not against each other. Several industry professionals were also on hand for job recruiting opportunities. After the competitions and displays, Gov. Michael O. Leavitt and other industry professionals gave seminars and words of advice to the competitors. The event was held at the McKay Events Center and was an excellent way for local students to take the spotlight in the name of their multimedia, film and technical audacity.
