The Payson High Softball team has finished the first half of the season with a bang. Coached by Marilyn Miller and Coach Kolbi, they are 3 o erall, and 0 in Region 1 2-- 5-- 6 Play. The team consists of 8 seniors: Pitchers Candace Forsev and Mckell Shurthff; Second Baseman Melanie Baker; Short Stop Shae Perry; Third Baseman Amanda Jolley; Catcher Estee Gonzales; and Outfielders Sam Scott and Kami Stewart. The rest of the team is made up of Juniors Desi Shaw and Kara Alexander, and Sophomore Sandy Marvin. Last week the Lions played three games. Wednesday, they beat American Fork 10-behind the solid pitching of Mckell Shurthff. On Thursday in the first game of a double-headeCandace Forsey took the mound to lead Pavson to a victory over Shurthff and Forsey Timpview. Shurthff then took her turn in the rotation to beat Provo have a combined season ERA of .78. Some awesome team hitting backed up these pitchers. Both Shae Perry and Kara Alexander have hit homeruns this season The Junior Varsity team is following suit, with a 2 record overall, and in but were unable to play Timpview and Provo due to region. The team Sophomore Left to right: Kyle Haskell , Nick Smith, Jeff Mathewson, and Jeremy Frisby It has been a long time since Payson High Tennis has had an undefeated singles or doubles team in region play, especially with top ranked Timpview High School in our region. This year however is different. Not only is our first doubles team undefeated, our second doubles team is also undefeated. Both teams should be seeded number one in the region tournament May 8th and 9th at the Provo High Courts. Our first doubles team is Jeff Mathewson and Jeremy Frisby. They have not only been best friends for many years, but have been doubles partners now for four years on the high school team. As sophomores, they played for the region championship in second doubles. As juniors they played for the region championship in first doubles, and this year as seniors, they are the team to beat. So far no team has been able to do that. After losing to Jeff and Jeremy the first round, Timpview High put a stronger team on the court to try and get a win, but our PHS duo beat them in a close match on Timpviews home court. They will most likely see each other in the region tournament finals. Spanish Fork also has a strong first doubles team who could be a spoiler in the tournament. Jeff and Jeremy will be the first tennis players in memory who have qualified for State Competition all three years of their high school careers. They are not only great tennis players, but are leaders in their class and have always been high achievers in all they do. Our second doubles team is Nick Smith and Kyle Haskell. They are both juniors and have played the past two years as a doubles team. They are both tremendous competitors and play well every match. Last year they placed high in region play and qualified for state as sophomores. This year, they will qualify for state as juniors, and if they stay together nest year, they may be able to match the accomplishments of Jeff and Jeremy. Nick and Kyle have had to win some close three set matches this year and always seem to reach down and get that little extra they need to win. For example, last week against Timpview, they had to win two of the three sets in overtime tie breakers. Coach Mathewson is very proud of his team this year. Not only has his doubles teams played well, but our singles players have been competitive on the varsity level. Daniel Jensen has played for two years at first singles. He plays the best singles players in the region. Adam Dunn and Nathan Money have split time at second singles and have played well. Freshman Aaron Dunn as played third singles and has a winning record. The high school tennis team has been successful and fun to watch the last few years, and with the brand new courts, we hope more people will get out and play. We hope more young people will take an interest in tennis and take advantage of learning a sport they can play their whole lives. Hopefully, Payson can build on the success of PHS tennis and make tennis a part of our community life. is 10-- 5 overall, and 2 in region 3-- After a play. rough start, they have gone on to win their last three games, beat-in- g American Fork 20-- 6, Timpview Provo 9-- 5 and 13-1- 2.
