Hostess Joanne Maltinson introduced Kolbi Bateman, daughter of Lance and Kay Bateman, who informed and impressed the club members with her volunteer experiences in an orphanage in Quito, Equador. Orphanage Support Services Organization (OSSO) is led by Rex Head, an M.D. from Rexburg, Idaho, who has adopted three of the orphans. The purpose of OSSA is to give these undei privileged children love, physical therapy and attention, and teach them everything from music to social skills while they are w ailing to be adopted. Unfortunately government red tape makes it difficult for couples from the USA to adopt children from Equador but 27 succeeded last year, and some of the babies are adopted by families in their own country. Nuns run the orphanages with an average of eighteen American volunteers. The goal is to let all children know that they are loved, that they deserve a hug even when they are wet and dirty. OSSA has about 30-4- 0 children ages new born to two years, with an average of 25 in the Quito facility. Children are served soup and fruit drinks w ith no solid foods until they are four years old. Twenty-seve- n of the children died before the American volunteers came, but only two died last year. Quito is a metropolitan city with hundreds of children begging on the street. Citizens are required to vote in their home city. If someone does not vote, he loses his citizenship. The country still has medicine men, and some school "bus" routes are actually handled by canoes.
