In many communities, crime is a major problem. The Boy Scouts of America Crimp Prevention Program was created to use the collective resources of our youth, adult membership and law enforcement agencies, as well as the community, to address the problem of crime in our communities. To earn the Crime Prevention Award, requirements in two phases must be completed. Phase I requires the applicant and family members to complete a home security checklist, which was given by Officer Johnson. This was mandatory for each of the boys to complete at home under the direction of their parents, and included home, garage, car, phone and door safety. A visit to a local police station, meeting and receiving training from area police officers on crime prevention, was another step the boys completed. Officer Hurst discussed the ways crimes are solved, how to be a better community member, and requirements to crime prevention in our community. Officer Jarvis taught the boys about making wise choices and being a leader when faced with difficult or unpopular decisions. He also taught about and finger-printe- d all the boys. Phase II required that the boys participate with the den in an approved crime prevention project that would better our community. Bear Den 1 chose to clean up and paint areas of defacementgraffiti in the community. With approval from the Santaquin police department, our BEARS painted some areas of defacement on the Center Street freeway overpass (on the south side of town). The boys learned some valuable lessons towards being better community members, which will help them throughout their lives in helping others, their families, and themselves. Our Bears and leaders would like to express a special THANK YOU TO STRINGHAMS TRUE VALUE HARDWARE STORE of Santaquin for donating paint and brushes for this clean-u- p project. And a sincere THANK YOU TO SANTAQUIN POLICE OFFICERS: RODNEY HURST. STEVE JARVIS AND KRIS JOHNSON for their time training us to be better citizens in our community and country. Other subjects of training included not committing crime ourselves, being respectful to our leaders, officer and elders, and being watchful and aware in our communities of what goes on around us, and reporting unusual activity. Participating Cub Scouts were: Matthew Bowman, Christopher Berge, Ray Gifford, Tim Gifford, Korry Hullinger, Josh Stevenson, and Dawson York. Also earning their awards were Cub Scout leaders Becky Berge and Irma Bowman. I wish to not only keep historical sites intact, but want to help those who dont understand heritage and how important it is, or at least should be. I want to give you a little history in my lineage, that I am very proud of. Joseph Knight was born on the twenty-sixt- h of November, 1 772, in Oakham, Wore., Ma. He was married to Polly Peck on the eighteenth of January, 1796, in the State of Vermont. -- They moved to the State of New York and settled on the Susquehanna River, near the Great Bend in Chenango County, in 1809. Two years later they moved again, to Colesville, Broome County, New York, where they lived for nineteen years. Joseph Knight and his wife, Polly, had three sons and four daughters. He felt that he should give his children a good, common school education and then acted upon it. Joseph Knight owned a farm, a grist mill and carding machine. Sometimes, in Josephs work, he would hire men, and the Prophet Joseph Smith was occasionally employed by him. Although Joseph Knight was not in any religious sect, he was a believer in the Univer-salia- n doctrine, and listened to the Prophet Joseph. So far was the elder Knight taken into the Prophets confidence that he purposely arranged his affairs as to be at the Smith family residence near Manchester at the time the plates of the Book of Mormon were given into Josephs possession. Joseph Knight had driven a horse and carriage to the Smith home, according to Lucy Smith, mother of the Prophet (see Lucy Smiths History or the Prophet, ch. XXIII), and Joseph Knight. "Joseph, in company with his wife Emma, drove away very early--befothe morning of September the 22nd. It is presumed, of course, the Prophet daylight-- on drove to Cumorah, and there received from Moroni the plates of the Book of Mormon, the the Urim and Urim and Thummim, and Breastplate, which were, for some Thummim-concea- led in the woods." (History of the Church, Vol. 1, p. 47, Footnotes.) re time-excep- ting When they returned home with the plates, Joseph Knight, Joseph Smith, Sen. and Mr. Stoal were present. The first church was organized on April 6, 1830, in Fayette, New York. Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery then had the Melchizedek Priesthood bestowed upon them by Peter, James and John along the banks of the Susquehanna River. Shortly after, the first miracle in the church was performed. "The Prophet Joseph went to visit Mr. Joseph Knight at Colesville, Broome County, New York. This gentleman had rendered the prophet some timely assistance while translating the Book of Mormon, and he was anxious that Mr. Knight and his family should receive the truth. While in Mr. Knights neighborhood, the prophet held a number of meetings. Amongsfthose who regularly attended was Newel Knight, son of Joseph Knight. He and the prophet had many serious conversations on the subject of mans salvation. In the meetings held, the people prayed often, and in one of the aforesaid conversations with the prophet, Newel Knight promised that he would pray publicly. When the time came, however, his heart failed him, and he refused, saying that he would wait until he got into the woods by himself. The next morning when he attempted to pray in the woods, he was overwhelmed with a sense of having neglected his duty the evening before in not praying in the presence of others. He began to feel uneasy and it continued to grow worse both in mind and body, until upon reaching home his appearance was such as to alarm his wife. He sent for the prophet who, when he came, found Newel in a sad condition and suffering greatly. His visage and limbs were distorted and twisted in every shape imaginable. At last he was caught up off the floor and tossed about most fearfully. The neighbors, hearing of his condition, came running in. After he had suffered for a time, the prophet succeeded in getting him by the hand when immediately Newel spoke to him saying he knew he was possessed of the devil and that the prophet had power to ease him out. With that, the prophet Joseph replied, If you know I can, it shall be done. Then impulsively he rebuked Satan and commanded him to depart from the man. Immediately, Newels contortions stopped and he spoke out and said he saw the devil leave him and vanish from sight." (B.H. Roberts outlines of Ecclesiastical History, p. 330.) Joseph Knight died at Mount Pisgah, Harrison, IA, on February 3, 1 847. His son. Newel Knight, died on the plains to Utah, FN, PC, NE, on January 11, 1847. These histories come from my mothers side of the family. On my fathers side, I am related to the Prophet Joseph Smith through my grandmother Gloria Smith Barnett.
