Show Local climber survives China mountain ordeal News has been received through the Associated Press in Peking, China, of the tragic death of one member of the first exclusively American team of mountain climbers to be granted access to mountains in China. Roger Kirkpatrick of Princeton, N.J. fell to his death from a cliff during a snowstorm. Stephen M. Creer, M.D., a native of Spanish Fork, is one of the survivors. Other members of the team are Bill McDowell, Karen Ratner, M.D., and Jerry Clayton, all from Denver. The team left Denver July 3 to climb Mustagh Ata (25,000 ft.) at the extreme western edge of China. They began the climb about July 10 after traveling by plane, trans-Chinrailroad, bus, camels and skis. Roger Kirkpatrick and Steve Creer reached the top of the mountain, stayed for about an hour, but began their descent when a sudden snowstorm approached. About 500 ft. below the top, Kirkpatrick, blinded by the snow, fell from a cliff. Recovery of the body was impossible. Dr. Creer was lost for three days searching for camp, and suffered frostbite of his hands and feet, though not so seriously as to require hospitalization. The team returned to Denver on August 10. Some or all of the group have climbed together several times before. Dr. Creer began climbing with Timpanogos, then many of the 14,000 ft. peaks around Denver. Later he climbed Mt. McKinley in Alaska, three volcanoes in Mexico, several peaks in Peru, Mt. Communism (formerly Mt. Stalin) the highest mountain in U.S.S.R.. and within 100 BBBO Page in PRC A standings Team members agree that it is not only getting to the top that matters, but the strength of the friendship among them, and the thrill, of seeing strange countries and the wonderful people in them.
