Show Your Garden Begonias The Begonia Tuberhybrida is known to Begonia lovers as the Tuberous Root Begonia, the Tuberous Begonia, or simple as the Begonia. By whatever name we call this beauty, we are speaking of a flower that has definitely captured the fancy of western gardeners. While the gardens of the Pacific Northwest provide natural habitat for this shade loving flower, its popularity is spreading far and wide. March to April aeemi to be the Ideal time to start Begonias in the average home. Start with number one tubers. Place bare tubers in a warm room, keep them moist, and let sprouts When sprouts have appear. clearly started (there still won't be any roots yet), plant the tubers in a loose potting mixture, placing them deep enough so that the sprouts are just out of sight. You cant get good root development from the tubers unless they are surrounded by the potting mixture in this way. This is because most of the roots develop from the top of the tuber. After shoots appear well above the soil, be sure to avoid spindliness by giving them the best possible light (and not too high temperatures). A good potting mixture can be mix of prepared by using a 50-5- 0 peat moss and screened compost, or half peat moss and half pumice. To each mixture add a teaspoon of a fertilizer per bushel (approximately 60 lb.) of soil Moisten the potting mix after adding the fertilizer and a fungicide like Dexon, and let it stand for about a week before putting in house plant as it blooms and thrives in an atmosphere of high humidity and constant moisture during the summer. This condition calls for free circulation of fresh air to take care of the constant transpiration, and a well drained flower bed to prevent wet feet and Phytophthora Root Rot, which may cause bud dropping, stem rot, and yellow foliage. When transplanting, set out young plants with as little disturbance of the root system as possible when transferring from flats to pots tubs or beds where they are to remain for the rest of the summer. Dig the holes in the bedding soil deeper than necessary to receive the plant. "Work into the bottom of the hole a helping of plant food or well rotted compost. You may want to treat the bed with a fungicide like Dexon. the tuber. The chief problem between starting the tubers and setting them out is to keep them from becoming too spindly while at the same time encouraging them to the strongest most vigorous growth. The crux of success is giving them enough light, turning them every 2 or 3 days if you are using a window which gives light to one side. Maintain temperatures around degrees F., and a high humidity. The Begonia is definitely not a 50-5- 5 Dont set the plants too close The larger, double together. begonias need to be 24 inches and the single varieties should be at least 16 to 18 inches apart. Be sure to face the plant correctly. The dart shaped leaves point in the direction the flower will face. Stake the plants as soon as they get top heavy with blossoms. Some of the large commercial growers change the kind of fertilizer when buds start to form and show color. They use one that is not so high in nitrogen and is much higher in phosphate and potassium. A fairly good fertilizer mix can be made at home by adding one lb. of Potassium Nitrate to two lb. of Potassium Sulfate and two lb. The home gardener can have near perfect plants too, just like the commercial grower, by following the same methods. produce colored longer-lastin- g Gadabouts Madoline Dixon Jeane Lundholm of Payson attended a reunion of the Clyde Tervort family, held in Fall Brook, Dalifor-ni- a recently.
