Jim and his wife Julie operate Payson Antiques at 280 East 100 North. Julie runs the business while Jim is away at times with Schick Sunn Classics Productions. He is now Prop Master, having worked up over the past few years from Prop Assistant. The Fall of the House of Usher vas filmed in an abandoned brewery in West Salt Lake. Jim said the floor was rigged so that truck inner tubes could be inflated underneath and the whole affair jiggled by prop men to simulate an earthquake. There was also a propane-fuelesystem to simulate a blazing fire. The set had to include nineteenth century furniture. That was right up my alley, Jim said, referring to the fact that hes been in the antique business for several years now. For Hangar 18, which has just recently been released and will be in central Utah shortly,' Jim fashioned a flying saucer out of plastic using a system. He said the hours are long during filming, usually from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. six days a week. He pointed out that three other items are needed, subject to approval of the art director and the film director. He said it was also necessary to talk with individual actors in order to match some items to their personalities. He said many of the items used on sets are simply picked up in local stores, especially in the case of a modem set, such as the one for the pilot film Earthbound, starring Burl Ives about a Martian family abandoned in modern America, something similar to "Mork and Mindy. Jim is a native of Payson, born here in 1938. He left for San Francisco in 1958 where he worked as a copy writer for a large advertising firm, Young and Rubi-caInc. He wrote TV commercials for such accounts as Chrysler and Hunts Ketchup. Later, he went into business as an antique dealer there, a business he moved to Payson in 1971. He operates his antique business as a family affair, his wife Julie handling the shop while he works on films. They have three children, Christopher, Susan, and Amy. r |
