Show The Payson Chronicle, December 12, 1990, Page 8 Some Facts From The Eight-Yea- r Of Santaquin Citys Budget Analysis Paul Sorenson presented Santaquin City Council with an eight-yeCity auditory analysis of the Citys financial position during a recent City Council Meeting: Although it is difficult to make any generalizations about the figures on the report because of changstill ing situations, such as changes in tax rates, varying Gty projects and needs, etc., it is period from interesting to compare the past years budget with others during the eight-yeJune 30, 1983 to June 30, 1990. For example, the figure for General Government Expenditures for last year (ended June 30, 1990) is the lowest since 1983.. Santaquin Citys General Government Spending totaled $100,068 compared with an eight-yehigh of $140,295 in the budget ending on June 30, 1985. The 1983 figure was $70,688, but property tax assessments were lower that year, so the Citys total revenues were significantly lower. $359,120 compared with last years $598,265. Spending for Public Safety was higher last year than for any of the previous eight years: $159,439. Prior to that the most spent for Public Safety was in the year ending on June 30, 1987, with $145,888. More was spent on Highways and Streets last year than in any of the previous eight years: $95,561, compared with a previous high of $81,703 in the budget ended June 30, ar ar ar 1986. Spending on Sanitation was a little higher last year than it was the previous year, but well in line with spending during the other eight years. .Culture and Recreation saw spending higher than the previous two years, but significantly lower than the years ending 1987, 1986, and 1985. Last years budget spent $29,89 1 , compared withahighof$57,507inthe budget ended in 1 986 and a low of $ 1 3 ,270 in the budget ended in 1983. Property Tax Revenues last year were $ 108,478, in line with recent years. The highest property-tax-revenyear ended June 30, 1$86, with $109,41 1. The lowest was the year ended June 30, 1983, with $85,031. Sales Tax Revenue was higher last year than any other year with $86,648. Before that the best year for sales tax revenue was that ending June 30, 1988, when $84,995 came in. The scantiest year for sales tax income in Santaquin was the year ended in 1983 when only $26,486 came in from sales tax, the difference probably stemming from changes in the sales tax distribution laws in Utah because by the next year the figure had jumped to $53,942. Franchise tax revenues were down from previous years because of Utah Power and Lights rate reductions. Last year, $58,877 came in freon franchise taxes compared with a high of $71,280 in the year ended in 1985. ue Hortt Carter, left, and Farrel Bott stand before the Chieftain Museum where in the bell tower behind them sits the Christmas star that will shine again this year after several years absence. Star Shines Again From Old Santaquin School The star has been resurrected on the old Santaquin School! Residents of Santaquin remember the lighted Christmas star that graced the top of the old Santaquin Junior High building for many years, but ceased shining a few years back. Its now back in place, shifted over to the bell tower on the Santaquin Chieftain Museum. Hortt Carter and Farrel Bott helped resurrect the tradition when they found the wooden-frame- d decoration among odds and ends on the old stage as they were refinishing the gym floor last week along with Farrels brother Shane. Johnny Deuel, lifelong resident of Santaquin, remembers having to build a similar structure as a shop project in retribution for some childhood infraction of the Santaquin School rules. The erne Hortt and Farrel showed the Chronicle Saturday morning seems a little newer than that Johnny would have built his star in 1957, with the help of Vance Marshall and Robert Jarvis, as he recalls, and under the direction of Mr. Staheli. Farrels mom, Donna Bott, attended school in Santaquin, and she remembers a star on the building at least as far back as 1938. Of course, several stars could have been built and replaced during the stretch of years, leaving the exact vintage of the present one in :j some doubt. But without doubt, it will be shining on this Christmas season in Santaquin!
