Show FROM OLD ENGLAND editor news thinking it would be 0 of f interest to your readers to know something about england and also the missionary life of th the el latter day saint I 1 take pleasure to wr write ite boti you in briet brief I 1 am at present laboring in bury lancashire a small town about eight miles from Afan manchester chester a town ot of about seventy thousand inhabitants and it contains several hundred public I 1 to houses or salo saloons ansas as we call them at home I 1 am sorry to say they have open doors on sunday which esob is observed more as a holiday thana Uia day of worship ship in and around bury is the largest cotton mill district ot of england it not in the world I 1 visited a short time ago the great city of london where all the elders held a conference of three days sessions and then I 1 visited my relatives whom I 1 had not seen tor for dirty years and many whom I 1 had bad never kicen been 1 il I returned to my field of labor and took up missionary life again we tract from house to house five or six hours each day and occasionally get into a gospel conversation and are sometimes insulted we holu hold street meetings as often as convenient and sometimes meet opposition which always does the work of spreading the truth troth good the saints here are living in a scattered condition and it keeps the elders very busy to attend to their duties and visit the saints we are now having ten days rest all mills and works having closed for what they term the summer vacation and everybody Is at the sea side therefore ie we have to rest also I 1 visited the great resort known as blackpool brackpool Black pool where one of the largest scenic railroads in england is oper operated 11 also the highest towers and a very largo wheel containing man coaches which revolves around taking people nearly feet in the air I 1 also visited the old church built A D by the catholics and afterwards taken from them by the church of england it Is a fine building surrounded by the church yard which contains graves several hundred years old a number of bodies being put in each grave I 1 also visited the deep road cut for street cars and vehicles lil cles that was excavated by the unemployed of england caused by the cotton business depression during our civil war the english government had to come to the rescue of the people to keep heep them from starving to death also ft saw v the rock upon which the imprisoned soldier sat after long years of absence and listened to the bells tolling telling the wedding of his loving wife which took p place 1 lace about one hour before he re reached ached the town on the day ot of his bis return home having rece received I 1 ve I 1 no message from him she supposed him dead this stone is kept painted white in Us his remembrance I 1 have also visited the place where the noted oliver cromwell stayed when he was in lancashire a very ancient lookin looking gu building 11 ding I 1 assure you As ag fast as we increase our number others leave for utah several more leaving tor for utah and idaho today I 1 enjoy my labors as a missionary and hope to do some good I 1 would be pleased to hear from any of your readers who have friends or relatives around bury or manchester we find by visiting these we very often get intha gospel conversation and much good is accomplished I 1 assure you I 1 lay the box elder news down until I 1 have read every paragraph wishing the news prosperity and all the good people ot of box elder county the same I 1 am your friend and reader ARTHUR J MUNNS |
