Show FRUIT PACKING dear editor if my elfort in writing this article Is worthy of publication I 1 shall appreciate it very much it if aou ou will kindly give it space in your valuable paper prom from personal observation and from extensive inquiry I 1 am fully convinced that the state of utah and more particularly brigham Br ighani city will never take the places they are entitled to by nature as fruit producers until we as growers shall have made ourselves acquainted with our standing I 1 ng in the market of the world and having learned that ws we will then set to and strengthen our weal weak places it seems to be conceded that brigham han city peoLe peaches hes particularly and of the state of 0 utah a as s a whole are the best flavored peaches in the world then too we ure are conceded to be the poorest packers in the world while I 1 am not willing to admit the latter statement I 1 must confess that we show by our actions that we are very poor packets pac keis now what is our remedy it if we have the best peaches in the world and do believe we have what reason is there good pa packers chers all that it requires is study and application no one man can possibly made a record for the state stale of utah neither tor for brigham city tor for so long as there are poor packs leaving the producers and going onto the tha markets so long will our name as good packers be damaged There therefore fote I 1 am persuaded to believe and may say fully convinced that we never will get required and desired results until we become united and all work together for that purpose I 1 think that every case ot of peaches pea elies packed in brigham city should be put under the general supervision of an inspector then we would get a pack and tilts this condition will come but why do we delay this important matter we have the fruit growers association and the other shippers why not unite and pack uniformly and if any one else comes here to get our peaches fiam the orchards refuse to sell to them unless they are willing to have the pack continued on page four FRUIT PACKING continued from first page made up lip to standard of course I 1 am converted that every peach ln the state of oc utah should be sold by one management and with that object in view tho the utah fruit exchange has been organized and every grower and shipper in the state should be boosters boasters bo tor for said organization and when we will do that then and not until then win will we ask producers and packers of fruit and more particularly for elberta I 1 I 1 think hink there Is no question thattie shippers are all converted to the idea of all c carload a r sales being made by one organization but all are not willing to admit that the utah fruit exchange is the proper one but it if the there e are any such talk the matter over together and rind the proper solution and got get the proper organization locally I 1 think that every grower of fruit no matter how little should be a member of the fruit gro growers el S association and being such should d b oost boost for the same not with a view of boycotting the shippers but with the object of getting all the market will allow for your product the association may not be able to handle all the products profitably then it Is necessary to have the other shippers but I 1 believe that we as growers should be in the business so that we may know what the markets of the world will stand and thus assure assue e ourselves a square deal I 1 think that this year there should not be carload of utah peaches sold other than thru the association I 1 mean by that the utah fruit exchange we have a light crop eastern markets se seem to be depressed and prices low why should we take any chance on such when within our gates we have an organization which has stand standing or ders tor for a great many more carloads of peaches than we can possibly pack in the whole state now you growers and you shippers let us pull together and if 1 possible make tor for utah this year a record tr r pack which will be the envy of 0 the peach producing sections of all the world and having baying put up the packie pack if you have not got customers whom you yoi are under obligations to supply then toe the exchange can call and will pay you as much for your our pack why not let th them eni have it and thus not place your peaches in competition with the other pack and shipp ments of peaches and iou growers who are undecided as to where to sell Is not the associations ciati elat ions ons money as good as why will you look joel for other buyers when w h en y you ou are told that the association will give you as much or more than any one else or will give you what the crop will bring I 1 say shame to an association member who will try to I 1 influence nf luence his f fel el low in members e bers to sell to someone else anle unless lie he can call show that the same will not lot get as much money or is not getting tin a square deal at home I 1 in conclusion sion I 1 say as has been said many times the associations are prepared to take your peaches and pack them and sell them and deduct what the reasonable expense has been for handling and give you the balance they will buy your peaches either packed or lose and wll guarantee now that they will pay you as much as anybody else will you have your choice this proposition seems fair and aej any aily association member who is not willing filing to give ills his organization the first chance is not loyal to his fellow as associates nor to himself hims alf no nor to the tha community in which he lives signed A GROWER |
