Burglars apparently tore a hole in the front screen door, allowing them to unlock it. The inner door had been left propped open. Grant applications for park development and a juvenile officer pr- ogram are being prepared here. Ron Day, ad- ministrative assistant Commissioners to Renee Mackay and Jerry Wagstaff, is applying for funds to help the city purchase land for a park at 4450 W. 3500 South and to obtain a juvenile officer. The park grant request is being submitted to the Utah Outdoor Recreation Agency, which Day said represents the federal government locally, and must be completed by tomorrow (Friday). Competition will be keen for grant money in both areas, Day stressed. He pointed out that about $21 million is likely to be requested for park development, but only $1.5 million is available. If West Valley obtains grant, the money will be used to purchase property around the exa isting Babe Ruth League baseball diamonds from the Granite School District. The county has attempted in vain to obtain the property in exchange for Granger park, 3500 So. 3600 West, which would be converted into an extension of Granger high's parking lot. But a land swap fell through because of requirements attached to federal funds used to develop Granger park. Roughly $400,000 is needed to purchase the property at 4400 West from the school district, and another $1 million will be required for its gram, which involves a juvenile officer working in the high school and junior highs. Like the park development program, competition likely will be development, Day justice estimated. The reward has increased, but at Ken Price field next week, you can be sure that every time a foul ball leaves the park, there will be a charge to rival that of the famous Light Brigade bearing down on a single ball. Its the entire essence of the tournament, like the story of the musicals, that sets it apart. For the majority of ballplayers, the tournament will mark their last chance to stand in the limelight, to have crowds cheer when they line a base hit or strike out a batter with a curve that breaks better than any theyve thrown in weeks.
