Show Valley View News, February 1 4, 1 980, Page 4 Education Western Hills: Sait Lake City MayorSpeaks Jo Children KFARNS- - The scene was the assembly room of Western Hills Elementary School and students from grades K through 6 were anxiously awaiting the start of a very special Founders Monday Day program, morning the 11th of Fein uaiy What made the occasion so exciting was that Salt Lake Citys Mayor, Ted Wilson, was to speak to the students Following the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Principal William Mansell, Mrs Hairis from the PTA reminded the children that Kearns representative on the Granite School District stands next to Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson as William Man sell, principal of Western Hills Elementary school poses on the right. The center has set up three hour sessions in a classroom-pla- vironment y group that will enac- commodate up to 32 childi en in four separate rooms They are under the guidance of trained social worker-therapist- s and a volunteer helper A child is placed in the group that could best serve his particular needs Emotional age is the guideline used instead of chronological age The children have play time outdoors as w'eather permits, rest time, snack time, and are encouraged to learn various academic as well as motor skills The Center sti esses that thei e is no single recipe for helping the disturbed child Each family needs personalized help They do use the FYitz Redls Lifespace interview technique, a lot of positive outreach, both verbal and physical, and appropriate modeling The Childien s Center also operates a group home that is a live in facility for seven The average preschoolers stay in the Group Home is six months Counseling for parents of all childien in treatment is encouraged and arranged The Center also offers parenting skill classes, special classes for teenage mothers and parents of gifted children Speech Therapy for those children in the program is also offered where indicated Consultation services are available to day care center and nursery schools Also if an assessment is desireable. that can be arranged for children of all ages Who Needs Help? If a parent is baffled, discouraged, confused, and fearful about his childs behavior then he may seek assistance from the Center All children behave in unorthodox ways at times but if a child does it most of the time and for a long time that child needs help Not all children brought to the Center are admitted A careful assessment is conducted to see what would be the best for that particular child As one of the Centers brochures states, "We like to assess children for their individual strengths rather than lumping them into diagnostic categories The average stay for day treatment is 11 months It is believed that approximately 85 per cent of the children are then ready to enter regular classrooms in public schools, day care centers and nursery schools Center Staff The Kearns Center is directed Paul F by Dalrymple Social Workers assisting him are Sandy Stevens, Jim Wetzel, and Lorri Cohen who also serves as a secretary Johanna McManemim, Ph D is their Psychology Resident and MA, is a Betty Robertson, Psychology Intern The office is managed by Kathie Hedm Completing the team are many volunteers who give of their time to help these ' deserving children Book Sale The Annual Childrens Center Book Sale will be held on March 26, 27, 28, and 29 m the Cottonwood Mall Book donations ,are urgently sought for the sale Your donations can be picked up Call Ann Conder at arrangements 966-425- 1 to - Kimso'ramir for shopping at OF OHIO ' ivaueviFEURimEUi 3601 So. 2700 W., Granger THE SUPER CHEESE MARKET t Therapist, directs the painting efforts of one young child at The Children's Center.
