Show Valley View News, December 20. 1979, Page 4 Hand On Hand By Suzanne Hansen Christmas is rich in traditional lore. Have you ever wondered when you took part in these Christmas customs how some of them came about? Who started them, and just what was their original meaning? The yule log is one of our oldest of customs. For years it has stood for warmth, light, and protection. In olden times, in many countries, the bringing in of the yule log was a special event on Christmas Eve, one in which the entire family took part. Each family always selected a huge piece of wood for their yule log and trimmed it gayly with flowers and ribbons. In England, it was the custom to sit upon the log, sing a carol, and then kiss the log for good luck. This yule log was lighted with a piece saved from the charred yule log from the previous year. If the new log caught and burned well, the coming year was supposed to be full of promise. Christmas wouldnt be Christmas without a piece of mistletoe hung in a English painter noticed how pleased and happy it made everyone to be on greeted and remembered Christmas day in this way. So he had the idea of painting some Christmas cards to send to friends and relatives who were away hanging the stocking by the chimney for Santa Claus to fill is the American version of and old European custom. In Holland the children placed their wooden shoes along the hearth for Santa to fill. They also left ears of corn, carrots, or pieces of hay close to the shoes as a special gift for Santas reindeer. There are so many wonderful things that happen at Christmas time, and its really fun for my children and I to to find where explore and search these thing began. It gives you a special understanding of Christmas . . . and why some people celebrate it the way that they prominent place so that anyone standing under it may be kissed. This age old custom is said to come from Germany. Mistletoe was so rare that it was considered sacred and if the people met under a sprig of mistletoe in the forest, they become friends. The tradition has been handed down that when enemies in battle would chance to meet under the mistletoe, they would cease their fighting and declare a truce until the following day. Using evergreen sprays to decorate the house is a symbol of friendliness at the Christmas season. To the people of England we owe the custom of sending Christmas greeting cards to our friends. It started when people ... used to greet their acquaintances and friends on Christmas morning by a hearty Merry Christmas. An do. Our grandparents are from Sweden and every Christmas they have a special celebration. It was fun for the children to go to see how Christmas is in other countries. In Sweden a little elf visits the children and if they are very good he will leave little goodies in their little shoes! We feel its very important to help children experience and understand cultures from other countries, it helps them appreciate who they are and where they live. What a special experience each Holiday can be and its so much more fun when its shared with a child. May your Christmas season be a special one. Take a moment and share an experience or two with your child and tell him how you felt when you were small.
