youth those d irin 4 hl cj h J the disposition and character which W in influence lence tence and control the future destin destiny of the man maneor or the woman are formed and an I 1 pitr purpose pose with your permission to express a few of my ideas in connection with it in a as plain and interesting a manner as I 1 am able not presuming that I 1 have anything particularly new to advance but hoping that the few suggestions I 1 may throw out may he be the maans means of awakening the attention of 0 afew a few rew to the importance of the subject and when once their minds are aroused to it their own good sense bense and judgment will do doi the rest education isso is so vast and comprehensive a theme wem it W will lil ill be at once evident to the most casual observer that it will be impossible to domora than merely touch upon a few of its pran apal branches in an pai article of this kind taken in its widest range and most co comprehensive pre e seni sense it includes all that is orwill or will he be necessary for men and women to know it reaches far beyond this transi transient tnt lifland life ilfe and embraces eternity in allita thrilling and momentous developments jn in reality we are all hut but children and mormonism or the church is the Me school in which our our father has placed us in order that we ive may gain that experience and intelli intelligence ence necessary to enable us to fill with honor to ourselves and to him the positions in a higher sphere which which he ho destines deskines de stines us to occupy provided we wd prove ourselves worthy of them tham education is 13 a work which if ever completed will be atso at so remote a period that w need not fear learning too tog much now indeed the wisest and most learn learned edof of the human family have always asserted that after a life tome time assiduously spent in the pursuit of knowledge P they found they had scarcely entered TH on the confines of the eternity of 06 truth that lay before them viewing it in this light we might well be overwhelmed at the vastness of the subject and shrink from the responsibility connected with it but we are not required re ulra nira to learn everything ina in lna a day the architect who transfers fr from fin his brain to paper his hia designs for the erection orsome splendid monument of human skill and intelligence might well be discouraged were he expected like ilke the ibe mythical possessor of the fabled Al addina lamp to accomplish in one night and present to an astonished world in the morning the practical tangible completion of his cherished and elaborate design but he is not discouraged discourage ed though it take years or a life time ere he see the image of his fancy an actual existing fact and in some instances men have only lived to see the foundation of their cherished work commenced the foundation of education ia is about all that we can lay in this life but we can and should make it our s special care to see that such foundation is fi firm rm and correct there are principles principles simple and easy to be understood stood la 11 ich for form as it were the germ of all correct education the ground bound work of every pure and noble character which should be implanted in the breast of every child we me of 0 all people on the face of the earth earthy ought to appreciate and prize this science of sciences aad yet I 1 trust you will pardon me and not deem me pedantic and eggli egotistical when I 1 say that but comparatively few jew among ug us appear to realize its called of a collegiate education true they could not have done this without knowledge and knowledge they could lotain without study observation and reflection but they principally studied men and their knowledg knowledge they gained by their own efforts after trey they had learned its full value such has been the history of the greatest greate a t men not only of our own age and country but of the world they were self made fought their own battles and carved out their own i fortunes and why did they succeed while so 00 many others failed because the proper foundation was laid in their infancy while others were nursed in iry the lap a of luxury until they became enervated anT and feminine e these thes e I 1 were wire taught or forced by circumstances to cultivate the virtues of self reliance energy and perseverance correct education according to my view consists in in imparting to individuals such knowledge as is necessary to enable them to discharge discharge faithfully the duties devolving upon them in their various positions and callings in life with honor to themselves and useful usefulness dess to the community were a man intending to devote his attention to the cultivation of the ground it would be foly folly for him to occupy his i time in the study of law or medicine to lo the I 1 neglect of his own particular department of knowledge and so with any other course he might decide upon it R may be asked would you have a man confine himself to one particular branch of knowledge and never have him step aside from his hig beaten narrow path to pluck the flowers and taste the fruits of science and knowledge that are everywhere blooming around him no but let me ask in return would you think it wisp for a man mai to busy himself in trying to learn the size climate and productions of some distant planet the appearance and character t bf its inhabitants their manners customs and laws while he was entirely ignorant I 1 on all these points pertaining to the one on which he lives let men women and children learn that first which most immediately inter ests cats them and effects their happiness t then nen hen as they bave cave have opportunities they can take ex excursions c u into the ocean of truth that sur bur surrounds roun them hem but it may be urged a mans sphere in ife life and consequently his duties often change he may fill one position today to day and be called I 1 to fill another tomorrow to morrow granted then he will find as I 1 before stated that his education is never comple compie completed ineil in this life and he must endeavor to td fit himself for the creditable discharge of his various duties as he passes along but there are principles truths virtues which are applicable nay necessary to success and usefulness useful ne sa in all circumstances c 1 re a ni stances and conditions of life it is to these I 1 mean to advert with your permission |
