Its strange how each new year seems to catch us almost by surprise. It seems we have to stop and reflect on the past year just to be sure a whole year has gone by. We almost have to touch base with the past before we can begin with making goals and resolutions for the coming year. Last winters dry mild weather and all our fears for a garbage dump in the Oquirrh Mountains passed quickly to a summer of water rationing and talk of a solid waste recycling I. ml center. ohs ns a seiiic cpic-- i niati c is to mtonn uisiomcis ol the to use natuiul uas cllkicniK and al has sat'cti icioid and with oui lable s.iiih an cm atm uas u c a ian keep it that help One iM Min i as oath and cas detection One thine we do to insure pi eseikc of nalui al eas is to add puneent odoi ant to it it a smell that's cum1 identified. During the year the Kearns Crime Council got going and began to prove effective in combating crime and vandalism. April saw the opening of a new Family Life Center with more and better facilities and services. Sadly a few weeks after its opening thousands of dollars worth of landscaping shrubs and trees were stolen. June brought another graduation. June also introduced a new emphasis on women and power politics in the form of an exciting, but socially disruptive IWY conference for the women of the state. The biggest and most impressive hometown days parade yet was the highlight of the summer in Kearns. A beautiful day filled with hometown days activities ended with an explosion of fireworks across the summer night sky. In, August school opened to record numbers. The year brought the beginnings of four new schools for the W'est Valley; two elementaries, a junior high and the Taylorsville High School. Well watch these schools continue their construction in the coming year. The new Bennion Elementary School began operation this year also., During this year the telephone company expanded and with their expansion we all received new telephone numbers. Perhaps one of the most exciting moments of the past year was the naming of four individuals to receive special honor from the community and Town Council. Sgt. Dale Gates, Edda Timmerman, Linda Haskins and Harold Newman were named as the outstanding citizens of the community for 1977. The year is drawing to a close with the usual flurry and fun of Christmas, Holiday parties and hopes for the new year. And what about the new year? Oh, lets make the usual resolutions to shed a few pounds, be kinder fo our fellowmen, get out of debt or whatever. We here at the Valley View News wish all our readers the greatest success in keeping those resolutions, but most of all we hope the new year brings each of you peace and understanding. Happy New Year. |
