On that day, men, women and young people will be found on street corners and anywhere people go selling the red poppies which have become a symbol of the men and women who have given their lives in combat for this nation. The American Legion and Auxiliary have all their poppies made by veterans, generally disabled veterans at the Veterans Hospital. Every cent of the money donated for the poppies goes for relief work such as rehabilitation and child welfare. It stays in the community where it is given and none is used for administrative costs. Mane MiViol of the Kearns American Legion Auxiliary and the organization poppy chairman asks those w ho see the poppies for sale to remember that the main purpose of the poppies is not for raising funds, but to give individuals an opportunity to honor our nation's war dead. It is a gesture of remembrance for the sacrifice made by our fallen Americans. Kearns - Graduation speakers at Kearns High School w ere announced this week. As the class of 1977 assembles for graduation exercises June 2 at 8 p.m. speakers will be Kelly Webber, Rry Meldrum, and Karil Johnson. Dr. John si Reed t an, ii . m e Dotiict s will be the districts representative at the exercises. Jolene Dahl will give the invocation and Karen Ranson will give the benediction. Class valedictorian is Melissa Meister. The senior class has selected Its not a question of what man is, but what he may become, as their graduation theme. Following commencement exercises a reception will be held for the graduates and their parents in the activity room. A buffet will be served and there will be a dance. Three students, Cindy Mark, Cindy Smith and Dell Hudson have been assisting the faculty graduation comthe with mittee graduation arrangements. Glean Up Held Kearns - Rakes, shovels, hoes and weed diggers went to school for a day, May 11 Students at David Gourley participated in a grounds beautification and planting project jointly sponsored by the student council and the PTA. Everyone had a job to do. Kindergarten, first and second grade students collected sack after sack of trash which had been tossed or blown about the yard. Third and fourth grade students went to work digging weeds out of the lawns with a vengence. Fifth and sixth graders dug weeds from along fences and around the building. Money was earned from a cupcake sale on Tuesday and used to purchase a tree and several shrubs which were planted by the students under the direction of Mary Lou Munoz, PTA president. Post Installs New Officers Kearns - Installation of American Legion Post 132 officers and Auxiliary officers was held Sunday May 15. Don G Williams was installed as the new commander. His wife. Linda Williams, was elected and installed as president of the Auxiliary. Other Legion officers are first vice commander, Boyd Mott; second vice commander, Bill Clements; chaplain, Rex Bass; Adjutant, Ray Jensen; judge advocate, Bob Southern; service officer, Carl Parkinson; seargent at arms, Guy Mitchell; and historian, Milt Gibbs. Executive committeemen are; Ken Boyd and Kay Fullmer. Duane Willis will serve as Americanism chairman. Assisting Mrs. Williams as first vice president will be Shirley Christofferson and second vice president, Dorothy Mott. Brent w ho is married to Eva Stohl and they have two daughters who live m Lehi Don was in the Navy during World War II. He has been a member ot the American Legion since 1972 His wife joined the Auxiliary at the same time. He has served as Americanism chairman, and Post first vice president. He has served on the Americanism committees at the District, Department and National levels. He has also been a Boys State counselor for three years. Linda has served as Girls State Chairman, second vice president, president, publicity chairman rid as historian. She has also served on the District Girls State Board. |
