A large number of homes are being constructed in the low price range with the aid of the government subsidy; but the high cost of construction, compounded by high interest rates, develops a monthly payment that virtually precludes the average citizen from buying or building a home today. There are some areas in the state where home construction is expected to gain during the last six months of the year. One of these is St. George. In a survey conducted by the Utah Savings and Loan League during July, managers of insured savings and loan associations were almost unanimous in predicting an upwing in the business climate in the state. Mark B. Garff, president of Deseret Federal Savings and Loan Association, commented that during the last half of 1970 the business community in Utah, as well as in the United States generally, should show a significant change for the better. Andrew Brunetti, Ogden, president of the League and president of Federal Building and Indications are pointing to the Loan, said: fact that our natonal economy has turned the corner and the pessimistic attitude of overreaction is giving way to a more optimistic appriaisal of the facts as they really exist. Our local economy has shown' virtually no slippage, and if anything, business here should remain at a good level. Utah has fared well in the present business readjustment when compared with most other states, commented Gene Donovan, president of Prudential Federal Savings and Loan Association, and this will be the pattern for the second half. Utahs insured savings and loan associations contribute approximately 50 per cent of the financing for Utahs housing industry, and the leaders of these associations do not anticipate .any. appreciable change in interest" rates for home buyers.
