Show Thursday, October 19, 1961 Civil Defense THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS . . . (Continued from Page 1) out: The millions of tons of pulverized earth and debris sucked up as high as 15 miles by the fireball of a large nuclear explosion become deadly radioactive clouds. It spreads its lethal radioactivity over wide areas, hundreds of miles downwind from ground zero. Fallout radioactivity cannot be detected by taste or touch. Sometimes, but not always, the fine ash or dust carrying the radioactivity is visible. It fills the atmosphere, the air you breathe, and attacks the vital organs of your body with invisible radiation. PROTECTION FROM FALLOUT: The best protection for fallout radiation is a fallout shelter. Every family should have one. OCDM has designed several types of family fallout shelters which are described and illustrated in a new booklet entitled The Family Fallout Shelter, MP-1Copies may be obtained from your local civil defense director. If you are caught by fallout away from a shelter or have no shelter in your home, the best place to go is in (1) the corner of a basement; (2) in the center of the basement (sandbags covering basement wid-dowill increase protection); (3) first floor (inside hallway of a two-stor- y house; (4) inside hallway of y a house. 5. Stagecoach Perils Many are the thrilling true stories about the stage coaches which carried passengers across Utah in the early days. There were Indian raids, robberies, tales of bravery and heroism. The route across mountains and deserts to California went southwest from Salt Lake City to Fairfield, Rush Yalley and Point Lookout, gateway to the desert. Then straight like an arrow it crossed the desert from Simpson to Fish Springs to Riverbed. One true story concerns a wintertime trip in this area. The cold was so intense that the driver became numb and knew he was freezing to death. He tied the line to the brake handle and got into the coach where he and the passengers huddled under blankets and sopn Meanwhile dropped into the horses continued at a slow walk. Three hours later the attendants at Simpson heard the squealing of steel tires on frosty snow. They lighted lanterns and watched the overdue coach arrive, like a ghostly apparition. The four horses were frost coated, the lines were tied up, there was no driver in the seat. Fearfully they looked inside, found the passengers and driver on the floor, still unconscious from the long hours of bitter cold. After the men were thawed out, a new driver with fresh horses took the stage on toward Salt Lake City, hurrying to make up the lost time. Despite such hardships suffered by the early settlers, the sparkling cold weather whjch comes in wintertime is one of the things which makes Utah a desirable place to live. Throughout the state the United States Brewers Association also helps by making sure of ideal conditicns where people gather to enjoy beer tnd ale, the light refreshing beverage of moderation.
