Many persons have had the opportunity of meeting and talking with a Legionnaire. Membership in the American Legion is entirely by posts, of which there are more than 17,200, scattered all over the United States and in most countries of the world. Why are these members proud of their organization? If you are eligible for membership and have not joined it is probably because no one has taken the time to explain to you what the Legion is, what it stands for, and why w6 are proud of its record. Let me tell you of some of our accomplishments. The groundwork for the American Legion was laid at a Paris caucus in March, 1919. In September, 1919, a charter was granted to the American Legion by the United States Congress. Membership in this great organization includes honorably discharged veterans of World Wars I and II and the Korean War. During the dark days of the dethe American Legion pression opened hotels and lunchrooms in many cities and more than one million dollars was spent for relief work. It has subsequently aided in other unemployed situations. There is no rank and no religious or political faction within the Legion. It is truly representative of the American people and constitutes a real cross-sectio- n of American life. It is representative of all warks of life. Enrolled among its members are fanners, doctors, salesmen, laborers, mechanics, lawyers, teachers and students to list just a few. White it is primarily a mans organization yet there are many women who saw honorable service in the Army, Navy or Marine Corps and who are fullfledged Legionnaires. The Legion prides itself on fts service to veterans in need and heir dependents. It brings cheer to the hospitals, furnishes entertainment, procures legal assistance, medical treatment and financial aid or indigent comrades. It has been nstrumental in procuring the passage by Congress of laws which lave been of particular benefit to disabled . men. It maintains a National Legislative Commission which gets behind every piece of egislation of benefit to It caused the organization of he United States Veterans Administration. The American Legion provides for contact between the veterans and 'he Veterans Administration. It has secured millions of dollars in for disabled men. It maintains a National Rehabilitation Commission which is constantly looking after the interests of the disabled and their dependents. It is pledged to attend to the welfare of children and particularly of the orphans of its comrades of the World Wars and the Korean War. The American Legion has a Child Welfare Commission which is actively at work in their interest. In May, 1920, Legionnaires or their representatives visited every cemetery where American soldiers or sailors were buried in Belgium, England, France and Germany. Not com-jensati- ... Since that time, by the creation of an endowment fund, the American Legion has provided for the decoration of our veterans graves for all time to come. Americanism is one of the chief activities of the Legion. It maintains a National Americanism Commission. It annually sponsors a National Education Week, which has done much to promote education and check illiteracy. It teaches respect to the flag and love of country. The National Flag Code was written by two conferences in 1923 and 1924, respectively, under the Legion direction. The American Legion stands for the highest American principles; its members are going forward, hand in hand, for God and Country. Comrades in service, comrades now, we are pledged to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States . of America, to promote peace and good will on earth and to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness. Pages could be written about the accomplishments of The American Legion but space will not permit I have mentioned but a few of them. We are proud of our membership in the Legion and are proud to extend a cordial invitation to all veterans of the World Wars and the Korean War to join us. BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER IN AN ACTIVE POST.
