Show Page 3 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Thursday, December 31, 1959 ANYTHING GOES av you bjrw.kv Last week was Christmas. The one time in the year that all of us were more concerned with our fellow men than we were with ourselves. I am sure that nearly everyone has one thought during this yuletide season that is paramount in our minds. That thought is: wouldnt it be wonderful if this feeling of love, charity, and kindness could be with us the entire year. Actually there is a way to accomplish this very worthwhile endeavor. How? By working in Community Development. After all, what is the best way to show your fellow man that you are interested in his welfare? By giving up some of your own time to work in his behalf. A very rewarding undertaking to say the least because while you are helping your neighbor, you are actually helping yourself. the It might be well at this time to basic philsophy of Community Development. It is the process of community education and action; democratically organized and carried through by the people themselves to reach goals they have in common. We long for a town composed of people who and interdeunderstand their other. each with pendence We would all like to make our homes in a community where there is room and respect for honest dissent, but also a community which permits the majority the right to think freely, to plan and to take action, regardless of the opposition of the prestige people. Community Development is founded on the principles that all men, women and children in a town need to learn to accord each others respect and worth. Undoubtedly we all have visions of the type of community wed like our town to become; better parks and playgrounds; more attractive houses and gardens; a fine shopping center; a large industrial area close by to help raise the economy and living standards of our town. These are just a few of the things we would all like to see in our community. We would all like to live in a community where people are concerned with each others total needs. We would all like to live in a town where everyone is aware of the needs of the community as a whole, where people possess the necessary skills to inanalyze' these needs, make decisions, formulate telligent plans of action and act effectively in a cooperative manner to meet these needs. We all dream of a town in which all the residents feel that they share in the rights and responsibilities, the fruits and the failures of the community and are proud to belong to that community. We need to learn more about our problems, to learn to discuss them with each other and work together to do something constructive about them. inter-relationsh- NBrcr movdrjng we&c emd. . . All the citizens of a community should make the decisions that affect them, to the greatest extent possible. Many heads and hands are needed to get the job done. These are the principles of Community Development. Perhaps they can be put even more simply. The people who live in a community are best qualified to recognize their own problems. By the same token they are also best qualified to do something about them. Its a system that dates back to the early days of our democracy when people banded together for a common good. It is a concept that started even before Lincoln talked of a government, for the people, by the people and of the people. It is an idea that millions of people, not so fortunate as we, would welcome and embrace with open arms. So before too many days pass, why not call your block chairman that you want to work in C.D. It will be a rewarding and gratifying experience that youll never regret.
