Show to the agents and readers of the news arrangement 0 have been made to send out a special agent to collect certain debts due this office some of which have been due for a length of time and it is confidently expected that all concerned mil will be on hand to give him a cordial welcome and be ready to pay up those old scores se scores ores it has been deemed advisable to take this course that all may have the privilege of squaring their accounts without the trouble of making a journey to the city for that purpose the ex agents will do well to be on the alert and be ready to settle their accounts with as little delay as possible indulgence has been extended to them heretofore in consequence of the difficulties that existed in the years 15 57 and 58 but now there can be no further excuse for not having things made right and ft it is not anticipated that any will be made the agents for the current volume have in most instances done well and unquestionably there will be but few or no delinquents at the close of the year jear school books we hate haye lately received a communication from mr charles chirles 1 D evans a school teacher ef et Spring yuie vUle utah county on the subject of education is in which he complains as 11 other others do and have don dome about the almost endless variety of school books ar i nse use in the common schools in the tho territory and says ays that if something om ething 0 could bo be done to obviate the difficulty under which teachers teacher and pupils pupil now labor in consequence of having about as many kinds of reading and other book books in a school as there are cc hoolan lars larg it would be of incalculable benefit to all ill concerned far more than many who have not had experience ia in such auch matters might suppose kup tup pose he says that the tho duties of a teacher are ire more arduous and tho the progress of scholars not so great as a ia in place places where there is a uniformity in uch such matters and suggests that some salutary measures ought to be taken in re relation latiin to a subject abject of tuch such vital importance to community and especially to the youth who ought to make maka good improvement of what whit time is allotted to them to attend school for the acquisition of useful knowledge which la in this country is often too limited owing to the peculiar circumstances by which the people are surrounded rounded sur lur many complaints complaint at of the ame same nature have haie been mad made from froni time to time by individuals who have been engaged in chool school teaching OF and there is not a person in th the a territory that has had any experience in such matters matten who does not know that it would be a great advantage to precept ors ora and nd pupils if there was more uniformity in relation to school books than there is now or will bo be for a time to come unless some energetic measures be taken to brin bring about the object in question by those if any there are whose duty it is or should be to regulate such matters and make such recommendations as will if followed obviate tho tha difficulties that now exist in the absence of any general regulations a in relation to such auch matter matters we know of n no 0 0 better way than for all to do the best they ca can n under the circumstances but would su suggest 09 est that teachers and trustees of school districts might remove tho the difficulty complained of to soine iome extent by ordering from the east if they cannot procure them here a sufficiency of such sach books a as they may choose to introduce into their schools some have already taken this course and thereby have obtained a selection of books for their schools at a far less price than they could have been bought for here and thus have secured a uniformity so far as their respective schools are concerned others can do the samo same if they are so disposed and in in our opinion it would be no difficult task for a teacher if he could not do it himself to induce the trustees and inhabitants ol 01 the city town or district where be he may be te teaching achin to make a wholesale purchase ol 01 school books such as maybe deemed the most suitable for his school and thereby do away with the variety now in use until some general move ia made in the premises one has as good a right to say eay what books shall be b used as another and all have an equal right to do what they consider best for themselves ant the mere more union there is in their operation operations the more good will result from the course pur ased sued by those rested lo 10 tho the matter we trust tho the time is not far distant when a series geries erie erle of books will trill be introduced or made here suitable for the schools and institutions 0 of f learning in the territory such as will be approved of and generally used but till that is i done teachers trustees parents and guardians will swill have kave to do the beat they know how in relation to the subject and if they can do anything to produce a better state of things go to it at once without waiting for others |
