| Show from the rochester democrat an ancient and valuable clock there ia is now at the shop of mr nin alexander alien allen in richardsons Richard sons building buffalo street an old clock of elaborate workmanship and curious curious style undergoing repairs it is the property ef tan tin y of ellicott evans vans esq of buffalo to whom it descended from his uncle the late joseph hoseit Tf ellicott esq E sq of batavia Ba tava surveyor of the holland olland land company etwas constructed by the last named gent lemans father joshua ellicott and is supposed to be 90 years old at least there are three dials to this curious timepiece time piece one of which indicates the year ears month day of the month time of the day ay chail chaij changes of the moon etc another dial ah shows aws the position of the heavenly bodies and is in fact an in which revolve the planets mercury Aler cury venua ventis marb mars jupiter saturn and the earth with its attendant moon the third dial is a musical index for with its other accomplishments the clock I 1 is a capable of playing when in order no less than 21 tunes tu n es the thing thin gis is a areal real curiosity and when put ut in order as it will be within a week or 11 d hays lays a s cannot fail fall to tobe be worthy of I 1 inspection n action mr ir alien allen fell in with this clock clo cio cy several weeks ago while oa on a visit to buffalo examining some time pieces belonging to the central railroad which he was employed to repair happening 1 to call at a clock and watch establishment ent his attention atten attea tion was attracted to an old fashioned clock case and on inquiring about it lie was told its history T the works were shown to him lying neglected 0 in a box and supposed 1 to be useless nobody thinking in t it P possible cizo cito 11 to 0 put them theia together per factly neing being somewhat of an enthusiasts in such matters and a thoroughly competent man withal he made a slight examination of the machinery and modestly stated that he lie thought he could set the old ola clock again as well as ever the remark was reported to mr evans and a few days after air aliens allens return to rochester he received ed a box containing the works and a letter requesting liim to try his hand upon therm he Ife complied and has already progressed so far that a satisfactory conclusion is certain the musical part is already in running order and it will not be long iong ion lon before the whole is ready to return to 0 buffalo and be set up in the owners residence so much is the clock valued that it ia is insured to the amount of lom 1000 we believe that time pieces of this kind are not often seen in these latter days but the date has been when aben they were objects of great desire with the wealthy and powerful the first clock with an attached that we have any knowledge of was completed for louis XIV of france in 1749 the maker of it is said to have been 20 years in studying out the combinations A good many have been made since that time however but they are only to be found in old families of opulence |
