Show FREIGHT RATES no one will deny that the freight rates being paid by the western american public today are very excessive ces sive brigham city is affected in two ways by the high freight rates first by the general advance which has gone into effect all over the country and second by the fact that this city has been taken 0 off the common point list just one year ax agi the com ro myon on point tariff rates between city and the eastern points were discontinued which made an advance on all articles coming from that direction and april the common point rates between this city and california were cut off so now we pay the freight in full why it is that freight can call be shipped from chicago to san francisco I 1 and back again to salt lake city for just about the same as is charged from chicago to salt lake is mighty hard tor for anybody but a railroad owner to understand yet such a condition exists all freight goes from chicago to san francisco for much less than it costs to send it to salt lake thru which point the breight freight I 1 I 1 must pass on I 1 its Is way to the c coast now that this city has been taken off the common point list we are compelled to pay more freight for all materials comlin coming in over the railroad some little biffle time tile abw agar mcjohn Mr john 11 bott our marble man ordered a car of ii marble arble from croul the east when the car arrived at ai this station the freight charges amounted to more than the ma marble able cost very naturally mr air bott objected to paying the freight and simply told the railroad company that it could do what it liked with the stock he did not propose to receive it the result was that an adjustment was made whereby some hundreds of dollars were deducted from the freight rate charged in the first place and the marble was delivered to the consignee the furniture houses are also a mong the heavy contributors in paying excessive freight charges and there are so many little ways whereby freight can be improperly billed thus increasing the charge for instance one of our furniture stores ordered some oil stoves from a firm with which it deals the stoves were sent all right out but when it came to paying the freight an excessive irate rate had been charged and the furniture dealer demurred stating the the rate on oil stoves was 8 less than that charged char gedon on the bill Th the agent at the depot here promptly prompt j rectified the error the trouble was that in billing out the stoves at the I 1 other end they had been listed as fook cook stoves instead of oil stoves I 1 there being a difference of just 8 in the two tariffs but had not the I 1 furniture dealer been acquainted i with the rate the railroad company would have been just 8 to the good because the agent here has no other means of regulating its his freight charges than by the freight bills as they are received from the points of 0 s shipment I 1 lip coal is another commodity on which the community has to pay the freight just a few years ago coal was delivered in ogden to the consumer for per ton today inferior fenior coal costs the people of that city per ton the cost of mining may have advanced perhaps s 25 cents the ton and there may be other things connected connect e d with handling coal that makes it cost a little move more to place it on oil the market but sure surely ly not lot per ton ion more the coal beds of wyoming are not any farther from utah and much more of the product is being used now than was used a few years ago hence it ought to get cheaper especially in view of the fact that plenty of coal is being mined but no the public is made to pay the price or freeze to death the railroads are the greatest blessing to the country and they are the most merciless task masters when a road does not pay a good big dividend it is promptly abandoned and tho the public can do as it pleases but where good returns are rolling into the coffers s of the men who own the railroads it seems that every scheme is worked to increase the revenue even to increasing the rates when other means tall fall these conditions ought to be cha changed and the subject would furnish material er i il for consideration tor for the commercial club which by its influence and united effort added to that of the other commercial cl clubs abs throughout the state which are worl work ing for better freight rates would undoubtedly have its effect we suggest to that honorable body that it takes some action in regard to this matter and see it if our city cannot be again listed as a common point at least in order that ale might get the benefit ot of any little reduction in the excessive frel freight i rates rate which at present are in oper atlon fruit to the depot because of I 1 the 1 ie danger clanger dand cland in losing part of their load loa d on ac count of the holes and ineve unevenness 11 ness of the road who ever is res responsible po will confer a great favor on the public by making some repairs |
