Show for the deseret news utah county educational co convention A convention of trustees and teachers of schools in the county of utah was held at the seminary building ill in provo on the of july at 9 am the convention was called to order and opened with prayer county superintendent C devans was chosen president and J A wright ht clerk delegates to the number of eighteen from different parts of the county were in attendance the president stated the reasons for calling the convention and on motion G C W wandell IV AV cluff and II 11 E hudson were appointed a committee to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the convention the committee retired and during their ab cence sence ethe the convention was addressed by ey D S thomas C D evans and CD miller the burden of ahe the remarks of those gentlemen was the educational wants of the county and the befit best method of conducting schools by invitation from bishop miller the he convention now adjourned to the bowery and united with the congregation the committee returned and reported the following resolutions which v m ere adopted without debate resolutions L I 1 that the prosperity of any people thel their progress 11 in intelligence in the arts and alfi I 1 sciences the stability of their institution their might in war and wisdom in council the character of their morals and the excellence of their religion depend in a great degree defree upon the education of the children in their midst II 11 that the mission of teachers and guardians of public instruction is a sacred mission to their care for a time are committed our future rulers and sages prophets and priests husbandmen mechanics merchants and the mothers of a generation yet unborn III ili that as exercise develops the physical I 1 system so does mental training the mind of man hence the labors of the schoolroom perform an important part in fitting the rising generation for the duties and responsibilities of after life IV that lve we will endeavor to ably and faithfully fa accomplish our mission to the children committed to our care and to this end we will seek to improve ourselves in order that we may be thoroughly 0 qualified coln to instruct others V that the profession we have chosen is a useful and an honorable one and we will endeavor to elevate the same in the public mind believing as we do that hitherto in the absence of an all active energetic system of common schools in our new territory the cause of education has suffered from irregularity of schools and incompetency of teachers VI that conventions are rn mediums of union here ideas may be interchanged the experience of each becomes the property of the whole here we may learn to act in concert and to the whole subject of education ma may b be given a prominence and practical shape i aich ich cannot but be beneficial VII that the progress of education depends in a great degree degren e upon the energy and ability of school teachers A lack of these on the teachers part creates indifference on the te part of parents and pupils and alid under such circumstances there can be but little advancement VIII that no public interest can prosper unless aided and by the coment anity at large we therefore urge upon the public of utah county to sustain their school teachers and to make common cause with the county dent and trustees for the benefit of common schools af after ter the aA adoption option of the reso resolutions resolution lutio ns the congregation was addressed by C IV wandell at the conclusion of which the convention adjourned until 2 AFTERNOON SESSION 1 1 durin duning during the afternoon session it was moved seconded seconda and carried that the he merchants in a this county be requested ested to import for the tile use of schools the following list of school books boasi sanders spelling book and series of readers clark clarks as grammar naylors taylors Nay lors geography smiths and taylors ay lors aifons algebra smiths fi first book in astronomy J fulton and eastmann East mans bookkeeping book keeping goodriche Good richs richa series of histories Ilis liis tories 1 davies mathematical course except arithmetic and alebra sebra juvenile choir motion chas D evans was nominated for county superintendent of common schools for the ensuing year it was wag moved seconded and carried that the county court be respectfully requested to district this county without delay and arid number said districts as required by law A vote of thanks wa was le given to the authorities and people of provo for courtesies extended to the members of the convention on motion the country superintendent was instructed to extend a general invitation to the citizens of this thia county to attend our next convention it was moved seconded and carried that a school convention be held in provo on the first saturday and sunday of may 1801 1861 on motion the minnies minutes of the convent convention 10 it w were ere ordered
