Show gophers and fruit trees there has been and awl continues to be considerable injury done to fruit trees especially in the lower parts of this city by the little animal called the gopher and as there seems tobe some difficulty in capturing them we publish the following from mr arc I 1 L S hem hemenway enway bein icing the result of his own experience this this animal is very destructive upon fruit frlix trees rees and as many complain of 0 damages done is it not best to bring these little pests to an account for their depredations the horticulturist has but a poor chance with enemies at both ends of oe his trees gophers at the roots and two legged featherless animals at the fruit both doth of which should be called to toa a strict account for lief liet x t misdeeds gophers are very fond of the roots of the apple appie tree and will cut off roots cne and two inches in diameter frequently destroying them especially young trees I 1 have no doubt that a great portion of the fruit trees that have failed or become stunted in growth in many nany places here bere have been injured by them and when their works or heaps are seen ini in orchard or garden they should be at antes ong ferreted destroyed they not pot only attack the roots of fruit trees twos also giving the place an unsightly 0 appearance by their heaps of earth but they feed upon potatoes beets carrot carrots sp peas etc angwill and will carry off into their burrows such vegetables aa as they can manage the question is often asked how filow can we catch them to shoot them I 1 have found is the cheapest and quickest way and if properly managed is very easily done when their habits are known my itly plan is in the morning before sunrise or at sundown in the evenin evening ay open the burrow near the nest or where the gopher has been recently at work in such a manner that I 1 can stand within a rod rad or so of the hole and shoot into it I 1 shot two of these de predators recently one as quick after opening the hole as I 1 could step back and take up my gun an and id the other within ten minutes and at other times have been beeh equally successful in fair weather the gopher does not move about much through the day and is not apt then to come out to stop the hole when opened I 1 would quite as soon have a cow browsing in my orchard as to have a gopher there the damage of the cow is the quickest r seen een but bat is not more fatal to the trees |
