Proceed With Bus Project Is Highly Uncertain LARGE SUM REQUIRED Mayor Sees Possibility of Lawmakers Upsetting City Liquor Plan Adjustments made In Ogden city’s tentative general fund budget during the past week indicate It will be difficult to reduce taxes by two mills next year as Mayor Harman W Peery head of public finance had hoped to do Based on an 85 per cent collection of 1935 taxes and on the same assessed valuation as this year the budget as it now stands would provide a surplus of $3742657 which would permit a reduction in the tax levy of not to exceed 13 mills -- LARGE INVESTMENT Commissioners left a $15000 item in the budget for establishment of a municipal bus line Mayor Peery declares he is still "strcmg for the idea” Commissioner George O’Connor is definitely against it asserting he does not feel that the city should place itself in competition with established industries He also said whether the city should enter the field because it might be difficult to raise $100000 for the system even though the $15000 for the first installment might not be so hard Also he pointed out there is the cost of operating the busses to be considered Commissioner Fred Williams has expressed himself both for and against the municipal bus idea and neither Mayor Peery nor Commissioner O’Connor Is sure just which way he will go when the vote finally is called NECESSARY AMOUNT Should this $15000 be not used for busses but transferred into the surplus fund the surplus would be $5242627 still short of the sum needed to reduce taxes two mills To do this the surplus would have to be $55740 Tn revising downward the original budget requests the petitions of the police and fire employes for depression pay cut restorations were denied A petition from the juvenile court for a $50 monthly appropriation was not granted Commissioner O’Connor’s plan to restore pay cuts for employes in his departments was rejected The budget as it now stands makes no provision to pay compensation insurance or to supply materials on FERA projects except that there is $5000 for public improvements which might bet transferred for this use and a possibility of using money from bond
