hall on on monday tuesday and wednesday the and oth dinst the specimens articles and samples displayed were not so various nor numerous 3 as the preceding years in consequence of the peculiar circumstances that mark the present history odthe of the citizens of this territory considering the disadvantages under which 1 we labor in our isolated pol poi position tion so remote from the improvements ot arts which are so abundant in the east the fair presented a creditable appearance appear aiice arice and manifested a spirit of industry comfort and eter euter prize which at the least prove that idleness forms no part of the faith of the people but eleven years have elapsed since every prospect that met the eye was I 1 sterl leand cheer cheet less lebs no DO flock to bestow its precious fleece to the shivering stranger no tree lo 10 give its shade to the houseless jai wai wai war derer hor nor luscious fruit to please his longing on in 0 tast tasu no house to protect the themselves that the variety va was greater and the execution better tha than ritheY they expected to see indeed some articles would have sustained a respectable position in any fair in the east not we can only refer the r reader ea er to the list to be published by the society the fruit room display di 1 rich varieties of the finest kind grapes apples peaches currants apricots walnuts plums ac were in abundance altho aitho the season for some of the fruit was past A ons most splendid peaches could not be he exhibited at the falt fair yet the specimens produced were dell deil delighting atin to the eye and delicious to the taste this fruit gene generally y is q plentiful this year the show of 0 apples was quite a treat to the lovers of 0 that choice fruit they were large larg e and well flavored president young had bad the finest and greatest variety of seedlings on the tables mr i P H young and son sons s were very large for s so 0 young gardens mr air NAe Neb ekers kerls favorite apple was amply praised the grapes were choice and fitle fine excellent specimens were shown from prest B young and W C staines Stain cs gardens the competition in fruit fruik was decidedly spirited and the owners might well be proud id of their achievements iq in that useful troi trot ranch branch of culture their liberality in proffering assi assistance stance siance to those who are ambitious to grow fruit is certainly praiseworthy and as lovers and improvers im of our barren state deserve our gratitude the president and board of directors amply supplied a table of the various kinds of view of samples samples an and be zie nie able abie to know the quality of our fruit all of which were pronounced delicious rich and wholesome the vegetable ve department was not very full but the samples brought were excellent and choice squashes pumpkins beets carrots onions aud aua potatoes were good and large some good savoy cabbages were brought in in by mr air G D watt which attracted 1 I considerable notice they were large and solid and as good as we have ever seen tomatoes corn pars nips dips and other roots were good mr L A bertrand bad a great variety of the choicest peas beans artichokes table carrots and other vegetables and displayed great taste in their arrangement the lovers of the precious weed weedy must have hav e been pleased with a pretty fair sample of tobacco grown by mr air staines from which one bunch of or cigars and a plug of tobacco made by mr air B hampton gave great hopes of their yet enjoying that luxury without being compelled to await awalt the arrival of heavy merchant trains from the states to enable them to offer their burnt offering without dread of scarcity mr air S driggs brought in an excellent specimen of that plant and those gentlemen are willing to supply seed to those who wish to grow we have likewise every hopp that the tea plant may be pretty successfully cess fully cultivated in this place from the sample shown byard grave andee yet may freely indulge in 5 ithe tha the cup that chebis cheers but not pot inebriate ane ariates ll 11 grown from our own soil free from any dread of adulteration lun iun graves we are informed merely ob obtained the seed from some norae which he bad for 4 daily aily use and planted thep them so so that every lady here may try the experiment peri perl ment by y examining the he other things which are afi aid daily dally called for will be excited very excellent samples of flax and hemp were produced and we are glad to hear that they are pretty extensively grown wheat barley rye and other grains and flour were good though the quantity brought in idi was small the ahe samples of vegetables were not to be excelled in any country the cloth department was not so full as last year ar bit but the them qualities brought in in were good A piece e linsey by mrs kellar received ce i a first prize prize in that article and was fine and well colored mrs airs cobb brought in in a piece at a fate stage of the fair which wab was really neally good sevell several circular cloaks of fine material arid arld nd good colors and pattern were exhibited by president youngs family which wortle not disgrace the fine big fig figures tires of ot even the anos most fashionable ladies of the east we hope that ere long iong every lady who has any interest inthis in in this Territory will Vill be adorned with garments 0 of our own workmanship and display more rivalry in in showing native cloth and rai ments than in encouraging the sale ot of gaudy and poor materials from other and chi pretty pattern of plaid flannel which together with others from various hands presented taste talents and perseverance of an enter enterprising people the specimens of mechanical work thou though h not man many mans were finely executed and of material suitable three different sized revolving re rifles rifles and two bolster holster revolvers gained much admiration as work well executed they gained the first prize and were manufactured at the I 1 public works where they are produced in in any number the stocks were weil well wrought beautifully inlaid with silver arid and carved neatly neati the card of cutlery by mr air jas wells was quite an acquisition and very creditable to bis his varied talents talent it consisted ot of bowie and case knives augers brace bits plane bits tacks sprig bits spurs currying knife and coopers sti shaving av in knife we hear bear itie itle he work of his own hands mr T showed some good and neat files mr air F frorer some good planes A violin belonging to mr W G jmiles made by mr air S olsen was deemed quite a novelty the workmanship was neat and the instrument beautifully proportioned the wood taken from these kenyons kan the tone is rich full and sweet the specimens of furniture were well made but not so many as heretofore mr rove received first prize for gents genes boots and was well ri by mr riser A life sized bust bast of president young by W ward drew attention end was gazed at intently by friend and arid stranger the former recognizing the likeness of him hird whom they so esteem esteem th the e latter curious to see the representation of ope vi ho leads with such unity so many people and was the great moving instrument to make this place an oasis in the dreary deserts of 0 the mountains A beautiful model stel made by mr thos griffiths was in full work and arid attracted many to gaze on the power in miniature that has exercised such stich influence throughout the world mr S J les les lea was faithful in showing the advantages of his hib hi sewing machine to the interest of the ladies g other articles must be passed over as we can not attempt to enter into the minutia in our report several neat home made carpets were laid out which were well arranged arr angad and woven we noticed one of crochet work arrange arranged d in in circles and diamonds all made of rag al and 1 d the colors well bisti this needed no cotton yarn from the state states and it is supposed to be more durable durabb e than those woven several good oil paintings were entered for competition one by bi mrs long received the first prize the second prize by mr air W pitt mrs angell an eil eli ell obtained th the first prize for pencil drawing mrs afro longs lonis lon t Is is its a finely fillish finished fil lish tish ed piece of artistic skill and her portraits seem to be complete in expression andgrade and grace other pieces evces in water colors were very creditable we ve noticed some ane ne specimens in the photographic art taken and presented by mr burr the thie views were local interesting scenes familiar to the citizens of thi this a city and could be recognized at ot 01 ce they were well executed we regret that they were sent in id too late to receive a prize as the committee had passed round two days previous the penmanship by leo hawkins geo sims and D I 1 graves were elaborately executed and the mottoes were appropriate and pointed fine specimens of copperplate engraving currency notes society diplomas visiting visiting P cards and ana watch tips were deposited lly liy by our artist mr david wad mackenzie the printing by mr air joseph bull buil both of which obtained the first prizes prize a A beautiful and elaborate card of printing ia JR gold was worthy of notice and id reflected credit on the foreman of the deseret news printing establishment mr jas mcknight th the e subject was interesting fo to the saint saints viz a careful e epitome toine torne of important items in in tha the history of tle tee the church chronologically arranged by him pim all displayed taste and artistic skill mr E martin received the prize for lettering in and sign painting which wele were deservedly giyei as specimens ip p that art leather was scarcer scarce though the quality was i goodard goo dand it was to be regretted that our tanners were riot more spirited as ve we understand that the market can call be well supplied in that article ayd ard and in many respects as goo good d as any imported some excellent saddles made by our chief manufacturers were shown together with some beautiful whips equal to any fancy work im imported ported mr air W A mcmaster brou brought bt in some good ropes cords twine and other articles home material and make this is a very useful department par part ment kment and the maker should be liberally patronized there are several other makers in the same line who we hope will with the attention of our farmers be able to supply our many wants the ladies work in all its ita branches was exquisite and displayed taste execution labor and arid patience which are characteristic of the matrona matrons and maidens of our out mountain home crotchet embroidery knitting spinning and netting were plentifully supplied sip plied piled bedspreads bed spreads quilts and other production productions from their skilful fingers calculated to adorn and be useful were beyond b P pond lond th criticism crit icim of the most fastidious the shawls flannels and other necessaries necessaries with which they seemed to rival each other combining the comfort and luxury of life and are such as no courtly queen should disdain as balow her distinction particulars are unnecessary where all were so good this department part ment of industry and art wils wits was b etter better supplied than any othet other the show of stock was larger and better than in former years mr air durham bull raised by himself was a fine and good specimen and a native cow and calf belonging belon jn to mr 0 bates a cow by mr W F R smith and sheep by mr J bennion were really good mr air groesbeck Groe abeck exhibited a fine cow large and well proportioned president B young took first prizes for a span of in mules tiles a stud horse and brood mare all of which were of excellent breed and in good condition mr H chipman had a fine horse which attracted attention though it did not gain aun ain a prize and several other animals were good and speak high for a fine stock in our territory the stock generally could not be excelled in any state in the union for blood condition and symmetry and was far beyond anything we expected to see here the cabinet of curiosities relics relies and valuables brought here from other parts of the world was an interesting acquisition to the fair works of art from hindostan hindustan Hind by mr A AT musser relics by president young from africa indi and europe precious con contributions tribu eions from the states and the relics from carthage jail in fia possession of air W woodruff tended to satisfy the curiosity of the visitors portraits of distinguished individuals in our community adorned all parts of the room the brass band under the direction of capt pitt and ballos bailos under mr S worthen enlivened the souls of the visitors with their stirring strains from the awning at the entrance and the welkin echoed the music so eloquently discoursed to the evident delight of those who heard olsen and foster with their serenade Se renada renade band entertained the company within with their heir spirited selection of tures tunes great praise is due the president and board of directors of this society for their disinterested activity in agitating the objects of the institution institute on which it if duly appreciated and energetically persevered in by our citizens will make us independent so far as necessaries tor for clothing etc are |
