| Show GREAT SALT LAKE CITY I 1 XV wednesday e d february february 27 1856 BY 37 THE am enon enor WHEREAS a portion of the utah indians have been committing depredations upon the white inhabitants in this thia territory by killing and off stok killing the herdsmen her damen and anil perpetrating g various other crimes crimes of a like nature and WHEREAS they still maintain a hostile attitude evincing in a determination to to continue their ou trages tragis continually threatening ning nine and actually astra ing the lives of the white population and every effort falling la tol essect effect an amicable arrangement gement whereby peace can be de cured secured aith lef ref I 1 therefore e 0 re deem it a duty which lowe I 1 owe to our common preservation to take late such measure measures as will be best calculated to prevent the shedding of blood bloody and to preserve the lives of our citizens and their property with these view and to effect the above object I 1 call upon the he military forces of the territory to hold bold themselves em selves in readiness to march to any point as they shall shail be directed by the Lieu lieutenant Gene general ralp raly who Is hereby ordered to bring such forces into immediate service as shall be necessary to sup the most judicious and speedy wedy manner the indian hostilities at present so unfortunately eristin etl eil stin an ami awl will trill also aho aid tho the civil authorities in arresting off lenders offenders against the laws when necessary to those persons residing in isola isolated ted locations and small a settlements as also to t those who are herdin berdin herding stock u upon pon the ranges I 1 say place yourselves in iii a po pos of defence either by removing to a safe sate place or tur in strengthening erian up your dete de fences aces and increasing your numb bumbers m to all persons who desire to pass from place to place 1 recommend that thai you go well armed and in sufficient numbers tobe to be safe I 1 also advise all the citizens not tor iff send or permit calill dren or females lo 10 logasa pass alone from house to house bouse or to the fields in sparsely settled locations especially in the southern and western coun counties ties tits 1 B vigilant laut and active in preserving your lives at d property from indian aggression and it is believed they gift wiil will soon be I 1 rough t to sue sus for peace it Is particularly enjI enjoined ned upon all tilt the citizens to conciliate the indians in their respective settlements and keep them friendly dit dig posed and induce themi them if possible not to join tha war parties now in the field done dono at great salt lake city this day of february A D 1856 and of the independence of the united trailed states the eighty finst first BRIGHAM toung YOUNG governer governor and ex superintendent of indian affairs |
