"With the exception of one possible source, there is no river or major stream that pours lower Ithan 'number one' water Into our irrigation systems," says Max C. Jensen, agricultural engineer and irrigationist at the University of Idaho. "In the last two years we have taken samples of more than 80 per cent of the irrigation waters over Idaho. With the morxthan tion, we have been pleased at what we found." To make the test as accurate as possible, Jensen and his workers sampled 21 sources of the water Came times a week throughout all months of the year when the water was in use for irrigation, and contin"tied the work on 12 sources throughout the winter. The problem of what snakes a water good for irrigation is one of complex chemistry, and it is title, Jensen says, that one system may- have a water that is heavy with alkali and still have water that is good for irrigation. Common impurities that snake up the alkali are magnesium, sodium, calcium, and potassium! Any one or all of these can contribute to making the water poor for tion, and it is also true that all are usually present in good wa ter. Balance of the chemicals is most important in determlned - - -- - - - - Mouataina-lala4110a4h;BeYs'll- ftit teria use these trace elements readily They make good use of manganese and zinc. Besides the bacteria, there are other soil germs such as mold types which also utilize this manganese and zinc and deprive the plants of their use. A disease known as "Grey Speck" is found in oats. This disease is associated with manganese deficiency.- Bacteria work on this manganese to secure energy, and unless these is enough for plant and bacteria, a deficiency is soon evident. If these soils are fumigated to kill the germs, then manganese becomes available. One investigator in Canada found that when a variety of oats susceptible to "Grey Speck" disease was planted, there' was present considerably more bacteria that work upon manganese than in a soil in which resistant oat seeds had been planted. Zinc is another element that gives evidence of scarcity quite often in our area. "Little lear on some of our fruit trees is caused by this same deficiency. If soil is steamed under presksure, many organisms are killed, then there seems to be a sufficient supply of zinc available for the growing crop. When fresh soil is added to those steam sterilized soils again, a zinc deficiency Rresents itself once more. From this discussion, one finds evidence that soil microbes are a factor to be considered when these trace elements are fed to plants. this I a veistos ters t irrigai Its wa comps I t I t with to see place becatt 1 "Th - Is got) forma have: must lag It trials - I use tt ficult3 So much have progn 1 ' only Inexp( aise on e nave nOt 11011e Lhat problem.
