NO BUSINESS STRUCTURE In short, they were an Industrious people-- , and in this sense the word "industry" was very real indeed. But the word "industry" as signifying a vast Industrial enterprise, an integrated business undertaking. was virtually meaningless in 1850 in the Valley of the Great, Salt Lake. In 1850 there were 14 establishments in the territory which might be classed as manufacturing enterprises, and the coinbined total of the people em ployed in them was only 51. Mining as an industry was still unknown.! Agriculture- was-un- -4 doubtedly the major industry of the time, but it was more a matter of community enter- prise, men raising crops to feed themselves Ind their families. than of commerce. Today, a century later, the. picture is tremendously changed. The people of the Mountain West still carry the hallmark of "industry" in the sense that they are an industrious and people. But they have too, vast integrated industries in the commercial sense. Sound economists believe that the region, may be even now only on the threshold of its greater economic and industrial development and that the potential of the future is tremendous.1 The story of the development from the 1850 days of hand-tille- d farms and crude manufachales to the multi - million dollar 'industrial empire of today is a fascinating one, and some of it will be set forth in this section. FARM. CAME FIRST In pioneer days, the need was to build and consolidate a permanent home, to be self- supporting and not dependent on the outside world. To do that, it was necessary to build adequate shelters and to raise sufficient crops and livestock to assure ample food and clothing. Brigham Young wisely counseled his followers to eschew the possible mineral treasures buried in the mountains until the primary task was completed. Gold and silver were of value only in commerce with the outside world and had no 'usefulness in sheltering and feeding a hungry people in the isolated mountain valleys. Later, when the first essential task was completed, men were able to turn to the mineral treasures, and develop them to the benefit of the area.
