The pictures have been divided into three groups and have been sent, a group at a time, to various schools in the city. Mr. Wilson notes that the quality of the finished product from Matsumoto is generally higher and shows more work, particularly as to detail, than the art of the Salt Lake pupils. The Japanese art also depicts school and community scenes. Mr. Wilson characterized the work of the Salt Lake pupils as being much more free and less "crowded" than the Japanese work. tHir IhrnMivH rkM ! Ml (hat tnrhen Mkft the Grentte fer Br m?. Pay For A Day's Work Lets take s look at the situation that would hold if teachers pay was considered on a daily basis. Here are soma notes to keep In mind: Under present Utah regulations teachers are required to spend 180 days a year in the classroom. The average worker v. ho receives two week's paid Vacation a year will spend 240 days on the Job. (This allows for Saturdays and Sundays off, two week'a acation and SyxSTRDA1 VC, K seven paid holidays.) WHOLESALE In Salt Lake City a beginning teacher with a bachelor degree receives (3,870 per year. On a day by day" basis this is 121.50 per day; (107.50 per week, and (430 per month (figuring a month as 20 working days). A teacher on the maximum of (8, 060 per year receives (33.60 per day, (168 JO per week, and (673 per month. That's a reward for effort equaled by only a few people, even Including those with comparable training. frC There are, of course, many people who earn more than that in a year. But remember they work an extra 60 days to get It Pay Still Low Now, we said that despite recent raises some teachers still are underpaid. You might ask How come?" It's a simple matter. It takes a long, long time for a teacher to reach maximum salary. In Salt Lake City it's 17 years. V In our opinion this Is a travesty and a disgrace upon the citizens of our society. A plumber, a bricklayer, a newspaper reporter and many others can expect to maximum or Journeyman's pay in five reach a to six years. Yearly increments often will amount to (3d to (60 and more per month or yearly increments of (360 EVERYTHING REDUCED to (700. Compare this with the teachers average annual Increment of only (137 in the Salt Lake City District. Weve made it a special point recently to talk with educators about this very point. Most administrators seem to agree that good teachers reach a relative peak of performance In five to six years. In five to six years they become completely proficient teachers or they likely never do. The fact of the matter Is that these top quality teachers struggle on for another 10 to 12 years before they receive the top salaries to which they certainly are entitled. Space does not permit a review of why this situation exists. But It does exist and It needs correcting. This is why we maintain that some teachers are underpaid." Never in their lifetime will they catch up" for this period when they were doing top quality work but were receiving only apprentice pay. The pay they simply never receive would secure for them a great many of the amenities of life to which they are so richly entitled. This inequity in salary schedules is particularly hard on young men trying to rear families. By the time they finally get top salaries their greatest need for money is nearly past. Some Districts Cut Schedules This year some Utah districts have cut the number of increments generally by only one year. Among these districts are Provo and Tooele. Admittedly It takes money to shrink the schedule. But boards of education would do the teaching profession and the schools and children a real favor If theyd arbitrarily speed up schedules when money Is available, even though it might mean smaller raises for teachers on the top of the salary schedule.
