Sen. John F. Kennedy, a Roman Catholic; and Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, a Protes tant, two of the rivals for that nomination, both laid out arguments Thursday why there should be no such issue. Both contended that a candidates religious faith Kennedys should not be a factor In the choice of a candidate. Both were applauded by their audience at the annual meeting of the Amencan Society of Newspaper Editors. Neither mentioned, however, that the unsettled question of whether Kennedy's religion would win or lose votes next Nov. 8 would influence many delegates at Ihe Democratic national convention next July. Both Kennedy and Humphrey appealed to the editors not to let the press Inflame religious prejudice or overemphasize its importance. Kennedy expressed the be lief that the tide In West Virginia had turned against him recently because West Virginians were reading that his religion was an overriding issue in that state. Asked on TV if he had benefited from votes of Catholics, he said that whites er happened in Wisconsin, there could be no such factor work ing for him in West Virginia because it had few Catholic voters.
