Moss was Assuring witnesses at the Canyon Lands hearings that there would be no lockup of resources, the lockup, in fact, had already occurred. Defplte denials by the Interior Department, Sea Bennett insisted Saturday the withdrawals were secret "It was so secret" be said, "that after I obtained the number of the application and contacted the Washington office of the BLM for a copy, I was informed that it was not for publication and that no copy was available." , "Since the application was filed April 4, prior to the park hearings in Utah, the indications are the National Park Service was going ahead with a typical national park, without multiple use, even though Congress hadnt passed authorizing legislation, the Utah Republican said. Secy. Udall stoutly denied the lockup charge. He noted that 281,345 acres of the area already are under oil and gas leases and that these uses are being continued. The secretary said he was attempting only to protect the scenic beauty of the area until pending legislation was acted upon by Congress. Secy. Udall said of Sen. Bennett: "As usual, hes all wet. I was anticipating that he would raise something of this sort. "These things indicate that Sen. Bennett has no regard Rathe facts. In my opinion, this is the final conclusive 'proof that he has decided there will be no park as long as he is senator." To this, Sen. Bennett pointed out that he not only supports the governors proposal for a national park in Canyo.n Lands, but has a bill in Congresa of his own to establish such a park.
