There wu a time In very early history when the days had no names. Men had not Invented the week. The only division of time was the month, and there were too many days In th4 month for each of them to have a sepa .rate name. The Babylonians decided to set aside every seventh day for . a market day and for religious festivals. The. Jews followed their example, but kept the seventh day for religioua pur' poses. They numbered the days of the week from the Sabbath, so that Wednesday, for example b was simply the fourth day. When the Egyptians adopted the seven-da- y week, they named the days after the five planets, the sun, and the moon. The Greeks took the seven-daweek from them. Then the Romans adopted it too, at the beginning of the -4th Century. They' used the Egyptian names for the days: the day of the sun, of the moon, of the planet Mars, of Mercury,- of Jupiter, of Venus, "and of Saturn. The day of the moon became or Monday, The day of Mars became the day of Tiw, their god of war, Tlwesdaeg, or Tuesday. Instead of Mercury's name, that of Woden was given to Wednesday. The Roman day of Jupiter, the thunderer, became the day. of the thunder god, Thor, and thus our Thursday, The next day was named for Frigg, the Wife of, their god Odin, and so we have Friday. The day of Saturn became SaetCrnesdaeg, then changed to Saeterdaeg, and finally Satur, day. To early people, a day simply meant the space between sunrise and sunset The hours of night were not counted. As law developed, it became necessary to say exactly when a day began and ended.
