Show FORUMFORTNIGHTLY.COM Reeder is fascinated by the idea of exploring a different world. He compared his aspirations of living on Mars to his outlook on hiking. Its like standing on the valley floor and looking up to the peak, Reeder said. I know its there. I want to go climb it. Thats how I feel when I see that red dot in the sky. Besides his application video, Reeder has posted over 100 other videos about beekeeping and science to his YouTube channel (youtube.comuser et. theCodyReeder). Reeder likes sharing his videos because he enjoys teaching people and helping out whenever he can. Reeder recognizes the possible risks associated with the mission, but he believes that the benefits of colonizing Mars outweigh the risks, which will be mitigated in training. No return trip to Earth is planned, but Reeder is optimistic that the development of new technology will allow the vessel to return. The plan is to worry about getting back later, Reeder said. If we can somehow make fuel on Mars, we could A-fra- me I cant think of another candidate thats lived off the grid for as long as I have, Reeder said. I grew up without city power. We hauled our own water in from the desert. According to Reeder, he makes 100 percent of his own electricity, and he can make or fix just about anything. Im pretty smart in science and other things, Reeder said. I have my bees. I won a national contest in welding. Sophomore physics major Cody Reeder has dreamed about going to Mars his entire life. His dream came one step closer to reality following his selection in round two of the Mars One astronaut selection process on Dec. 30. enate see Emily Senkosky Assistant EditorStafF Reporter I was pretty sure I would make it through this first cut, Reeder said. That was my first goal. Reeder said his long-ter- m goal for the mission is to see mankind become a two-plan- et civilization, just in case something catastrophic ever happened to Earth. Id love to see a civilization on Mars, he said. A outpost on Mars would make humans indestructible from things like meteor impacts. He said if a disaster wipes out Earths self-sustaini- ng human population, the human civilization on Mars could repopulate the Earth. The show is part of the Mars One business model and will generate revenue for the project and help determine the final 28-4- 0 contestants in 2015. Students arent the only ones who want to get things done. Lance Newman, environmental studies professor, would like to see environmental consciousness become more integrated into the schools culture. I want to see sustainability, environmental awareness and activism become defining features of Westminsters identity, Newman said. The only way that will happen is if students take it on as their own most important work. With plenty of change afoot, Westminster students can start reflecting on what they would like to see become defining characteristics of the college and apply for the Senate. Get involved and start making a difference now, Newman said.
