Show 4 ASWC FORUMFORTNIGHTLY.COM ASWC's May and Summer Plans Adrienne Cory Staff Reporter Amy of ' Only a third of the student body will be staying on campus in May, but ASWC and the Students Activities Commission are still planning events for students during the summer months. Parties and Movies The first event is a RAD party on April 8 in Shaw Student Center. A RAD party is a robots, aliens and dinosaurs themed event, said Brandon Lloyd, president of SAC. Were going to have dress-u- p contests, where you can dress like an alien, a dinosaur or a robot. Lloyd said. Well be showing different movies. Well serve different foods to fit the theme. Lots of fun events to make it a party type. The second event is taking stu- dents to the drive-i- n movie theater located on Redwood Road in West Valley. SAC will provide the students with snacks and tickets for the movie. The event will take place April 22. With the school population so diminished during the month of May, SAC has to find new ways to encourage people to come. We try to do a lot of different events weve never done. Lloyd said. We do more interesting and unique events to grab peoples attention. Lloyd said he was excited about this year because there have been years past that SAC didnt do any events during May. We wanted the chance to keep the liveliness on campus even though a lot of students arent here, he said. Students who arent taking May Term classes are also invited to attend the May activities, as are graduating students. Opportunities for Service According to Lloyd, there are no SAC events during summer because of a lack of student fees. However, they will begin regular activities again in August with the Welcome Week. While SAC may not have anything planned for the summer months, ASWC has some plans they are very excited about according to Josh White, Vice President. In the past, ASWC has lacked on service. As a whole weve struggled on service events, White said. Because of this, ASWC has planned what White referred to as a Summer of Service project. White said Westminster has partnered with South Salt Lake, as well as the Center for Civic Engagement, to proride weekly mentoring opportunities and after-scho- ol programs for kids. South Salt Lake is one of the poorest areas in Utah, White said. Its also at our back door. Westminster students live there and come through there. Its one of the reasons Westminster is partnering with them. The goal is to proride weekly service opportunities to students. The more broad scope services are anything from landscaping to charity donation drives, White said. ASWC wants to offer opportunities to anyone who wants to serve during the summer. White said one of the goals for ASWC is to increase the service they do as an organization. As part of this goal, they want to be included in the governors award banquet, where the governor honors organizations that participate in a certain amount of service hours during the year. ICC sponsors upcoming yard sale Tynan Costin Staff Reporter When springtime comes around, people tend to start cleaning out their houses and lives to make room for new items and activities. Some people give their items to charity or have yard sales, but the student government is holding a community benefit yard sale where anyone can bring their stuff to be sold or traded off. The Community Benefit Yard Sale, sponsored by the Inter-Clu- b Council, will be held on May 25 at Westminster. The yard sale was originally scheduled for April 13 but was rescheduled to be held on May 25 during May term. For this event, anyone can bring any items to sell. With summertime right around the corner, come to the ICC yard sale to get rid of some items, spread some smiles and makes some cash before the summer adventures start. |
