CONTRIBUTING WRITERS I I f She started following me; I thought she was pretty cute, so I initiated contact. Hey. Whats up? That simple tweet resulted in my whirlwind romance. We talked on the phone every day, tweeted and chatted on Face-boo- k. Our relationship was long distance, but it was great. Though we never met, I knew she was the love of my life. We dated for over a year. Then she died of cancer. I was devastated. But she wanted me to keep living life. She wanted me to play hard, to be successful. The next game I played in, I had 12 tackles. But then I discovered I was involved in a terrible hoax. By a man who lives in California. My girlfriend who I loved so much wasnt even a real person. Close Curtain It sounds, like a movie, doesnt it? Unfortunately, this is reality for Manti Teo, a linebacker out of Notre Dame. My first suggestion is you shouldnt start dating someone until youve actually met them And apparently, its a reality for a number of other families across the country that also fell for the same hoax. Its it? To think that anyone can create a perscary, isnt son online and can manipulate someone into loving their fake creation. But how do these things happen? I like to believe it comes from lack of online literacy. Social media has become such a dominant part of our lives in such a short amount of time; users are in a constant state of catch up. duped? in person. My second suggestion is learn how to understand privacy settings. Your profile can be viewed, and your photos can be stolen, even if you think you have blocked access.- Privacy policies are also in a constant state of flux, so ensure that you - periodically check your privacy settings. In the case of Teo fake girlfriend, the photos associated with her social media profiles were actually stolen from another womans Facebook page. Talk about sketchy. My third suggestion is be skeptical. If someone adds you who you dont recognize, and you cant view their friend list, stay away. If someone you dont recognize adds you, yet you have mutual friends, I again recommend staying away. Yes, stay away even if theyre hot. I know you want to have more friends than your sister, but we all have to 13-year-- old make sacrifices. And finally, watch an sode of Catfish. Catfish epi- is a television program where people investigate whether their online boyfriendgirlfriend is a real person. And most of the time, theyre not. My favorite episode was when a woman was dating a man, only to discover that the Facebook page was run by a teenage girl. Trust me, you dont want to be in that position. Ever. So be cautious my friends. Dont go falling in love with people online until you can confirm they are real.- It will save you a lot of heartache, and will save your ego. i I 26-year-- old - E.
