Show fe I r f THE FORUM - 9 JANUARY 18. 2012 at. 5 I t i far from a sewing circle . I Amanda McIntyre Staff Reporter Many book dubs at Westminster have been disbandfor ed except S.O.U.L. (Society of Unlimited ture). S.O.U.L. is Litera- the longest standing book dub in the colleges history. With around 40 members, the club has proven that there is a need and desire for a book dub on campus. Throughout the years, there have been six book clubs that have either been disbanded or fallen apart. The longest surviving book dub at Westminster had only lasted six months until S.O.U.L. came along. The club has trumped previous book dub longevity and is approaching its two-ye- ar niversary in fall of 2012. an- S.O.U.L. was founded by Tavish Bell, president, and Katie Watkins, vice president and secretary, on Sept. 27, 2010. Bell and Watkins are both senior English majors who created the dub to provide a forum for students and faculty to connect and collaborate. Hardly any members of the book dub are English majors. There are a lot of different perspectives and areas of expertise, which makes discussions very interesting, said Bell. S.O.U.L. is not like a sewing cirde, where you will be kicked out if you dont go each time you dont even have to read the book of the month,, said Bell. The dubs main focus is to comfortable platprovide a form for students of all majors, faculty, staff and alumni from various backgrounds to share and discuss their ideas and opinions about various topics in literature. Its very mellow and low-ke- y, you dont have to talk at all or read the books if you dont want to, said Watkins. The dub understands that people have busy schedules and that it can be hard to read We all a book in a month have lives, laughed Watkins. Diane . VanderPol, director of the library, has attended many of the dubs discussions. Each book discussion Ive gone to has been enjoyable because of the different perspectives people bring to the table, said VanderPol. Often the group is split in opinion about the book some have enjoyed it, others found it too out there, some have read other books by the author or the same genre, others are just trying out something new, she said. From kids books to science fiction, the dub always has interesting discussions; Some books that have been discussed from Fall 2011 are: The World According to Garp, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Johnny Got His and Neuromancer, Gun, cussion for February is Eric Carles modem dassic drens book, The Very HunI hope the gry Caterpillar. discussion will lead to some chil- cool, Freudian analysis, said 5.0.-U.L. dub member Lauren Allen. Not only does S.O.U.L. discuss published bookswrit-in- g, but the dub is unique in that it allows anybody who enjoys writing to have the dub read their work and give them feedback. Mikki Whitworth submitted a story that she wrote to the book dub called, David and Tommy, An Unconventional Love Story. If you enjoy writing or giving feedback, 5.0.-U.L. offers a great oppor tunity to get or give some different perspectives. S.O.U.L. meets twice a month in room 121 in the Giovale Library. There are two different meeting dates and times in hopes that students will be able to attend one of the meetings to discuss the book of the month. The book of the month is chosen by the majority of the members or on the S.O.U.L. website, soulwc. webs.com. Anybody can put a book up for nomination, vote for a book, or vote on a meeting timedate by simply posting it on their website under the Vote on Books and Times tab. S.O.U.L. prides itself on accepting any and all suggestions. non-memb- ers Bell and Watkins are gradu- ating at the end of this Spring semester and would like to invite anybody interested in the S.O.U.L. dub membership positions of president and secretary to contact them by sending an email to tjblll6 westminstercollege.edu. An seminar in February will be posted at a later date calling all interested parties. The next discussions about the featured book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, are on Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. in room 121 in the Giovale Library.
