Show 4 CAMPUS FORUMFORTNIGHTLY.COM Staff Reporter he end of the semester is a busy time for students, especially those in the music program. This December will feature performances by the Chamber Singers, Chamber Orchestra, Westminster Chorale and the new Opera Studio Program. The Westminster Orchestra performs on Dec. 5 and 7. The Chorale is a group of 50 students and community members that meets on Tuesday nights and performs twice per year. Another group that will be performing this December is the Faculty Choir. It features the voice faculty, and they will be performing selections - from Handels Messiah, according to music program director Chris Quinn. One of the most active musical groups on campus is the Chamber Singers who will be performing for the American Cancer Society this month. The Chambers Singers perform for a lot of ts and rotary groups, clubs, said Quinn. On Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m., the Opera Studio Program will put on their first performance. The first half will be non-profi- classic Italian Opera numbers, and the second half will be musical theater," said Opera Studio professor Michael Chipman. We even rented eighteenth century costumes from the Utah Opera for the performance. The musical theater portion of the show will feature the premiere of a duet written by Westminsters own Drew Olsen. The fact that we are all seeing his work for the first time is really exciting, said Chipman. In preparation for their upcoming performance, the Opera Studio students worked on learning Italian so that they actually knew the words that theyre singing. The performance will also have narrations and translations in the program to help viewers follow along. The program came about because of Chipmans passion. When we hired Michael he was very interested in an Opera Studio class, said Quinn. Voice students who are interested in graduate school need performance experience, and this program will give . them the opportunity to get it, said Chipman. For most of the singers this will be their first opera performance, and it will be all of their first times singing in a foreign language. This performance will be the first of many more to come, first rate opera productions at Westminster and we are really excited, said Chip-ma- n. There is a tremendous amount of energy in the music program. The enthusiasm of the students in the opera program spawned a new club called Music is for Lovers (or MIFL), said Quinn. There was a lot of excitement when the music program first started and this club is helping to renew that energy.. The club members love to perform music, listen to music, and generally just eat, sleep, and breath music, according to their website. They go to symphony, opera, musical theater and jazz performances. To find out more about the club or to join search MIFL at Westminster on Facebook. All of the dates and times for events can be found in the events section of the Westminster website. Admission is free for Westminster students and $10 for general mwuli rnn, mini fi ffr j.
