Staff Writer reviews 'cold' album Beginning in June Salt Lake City will show a free movie at a different park for seven straight y Fridays. The movies will all be and a good time for all ages. The movies will be shown on a large inflatable screen and popcorn is free while it lasts. Nick Christenson j family-friendl- Staff Writer King of Limbs is the sound of a band in limbo. It is cold, distant, and minimal. The tracks seem more like sketches than fully realized efforts, almost as if the band selected eight little ditties at random, looped them, added some percussion and called them songs. Drones, loops, bleeps and static form the canvas for Thom Yorkes sorrowful croon to color. The drums are and chopped, processed and looped into a paper-thi- n artificial sound. The guitars are barely there, turned low in the mix, existing only as another murky layer in the albums ghostly atmosphere. Yorkes voice is at the forefront, the one consistent element of the album. In many ways, it is Radioheads most effort. Thats not to say the album isnt layered it certainly is but the layers fail to coalesce into something greater than the parts, exemplified best in album opener, Bloom. Lotus Flower is the albums best track, boasting its finest moment, when the music builds up and largely drops out, alternating between two keyboard drones, two-dimensio- nal over which Thom Yorke croons in a lovely falsetto, Slowly we unfurlas lotus flowersjust to see what isjust to see what if. It is a truly lovely moment, and the one time King of Limbs shows a glimpse ofwhat made Radiohead great in the first place. The rest of the album pales in comparison. Giving up the Ghost is one of the albums other highlights. The song primarily consists of Yorkes voice layered into a series of loops that sounds like a choir of pathologically depressed angels. Codex is the albums one piano driven song, and its simplicity and lack of excessive, machinelike percussion is a breath of fresh air. Ultimately, the album fails to hold attention. It breaks no ground, it doesnt resonate emotionally, and it disappoints more often than it elates. It is, sure to bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy a community party under the stars. The Community booths will open at 8:00 p.m. and the movies will start around 9:00 p.m. j j Be I 'I i t Visit www.
