But at least it got people talking about environmental issues. According to Soares, paper straws were still better than the plastic straws people were used to. The paper ones were completely biodegradable. Though plastic straws are recyclable, they still are a bigger strain on the environment because of the petroleum it takes to create them, he says. Soares needed to find an alternative to the paper straws that people didnt like but didnt want to go back to the plastic straws. So a couple of years ago, he did some online research to find something that could work for both regular drinking straws as well as cocktail-size- d straws. He found the alternative he needed. The straws he purchases now are made entirely out of plant material. Subsequently, they look and feel like plastic, but are bright green in color and are completely compostable. The wrapper even states that the straw is made of 100 percent plant material. The straws made out of plants are a great compromise, says Todd Lamb, a businessman traveling from Seattle. I always come to Squatters when Im in Salt Lake. Their beers are great, and the food is always good. Its this kind of customer loyalty that keeps Soares motivated to keep its menu stocked with fresh items from the local region and the beer flowing. They want customers to eat good food, drink good beer and feel good about helping the environment at the same time. There are three Squatters locations. The down town location is in Salt Lake City at 147 W. Broadway (300 S.). The Park City location is at 1900 Park Avenue. The third location is in the Salt Lake International Airport. Hours vary by site and can be found online at www. Squatters.com.
