Show Arts & Entertai ih Nightlife inSaiyLake City The down and outs of going out for the 21 and older crowd I Jeff Sparrow Contributing Writer Just turned 21? New to the bar scene? Ive decided to take some of my experience in the nighdife of Salt Lake City and give you a good idea of what its like. Being new to this school last September, I had to do some research. I went to Downtown Salt Lake City to ask people about the nighdife here. The only thing I heard was crickets. So I talked to my dad, who went to school here back when the earth was still cooling, and asked him what they did for nighdife. He said, Mosdy we would try to convince a young woman to drive with us up to the Avenues to park and watch the submarine races in the Great Salt Lake. I tried that line widi a woman last weekend and I think todays women are smarter, she told me that the submarine races were last weekend and that shed already seen them! Unlike back then, the bar scene and nightlife in Salt Lake has evolved dramatically. A recent ordinance passed in Salt Lake City to allow more than two bars within the distance of one block. Contrary to rumors, there is an active nightlife in Utahs capital city. What is nightlife? Nightlife for some is hitting all the clubs and bars in town, nightlife for others are going to a movie and dinner. Still others see nightlife as enjoying a play, a musical or a concert. Nightlife can include a Jazz game, a Bees game or a college game. On any given night, there are people out doing all of these things. Today Salt Lake City and nightlife are no longer an oxymoron, but like jumbo shrimp they are not mutually exclusive. What would you say if I told you that Salt Lake City ranked second only to Las Vegas as the hub for nightlife in the west? Youd probably say, No way. Youd be right no way. -- I A Bar Named Sue and older venue Sports bar and pool hall Sunday 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. 21 and older venue Live music, restaurant and pub Sky Bar Monday f I I Red Lion Hotel 13th floor 600 South 200 West 21 and older venue Restaurant, karaoke, dance club j I Green Street j 602 East 500 South j , ! So where is the Salt Lake City nighdife? Actually theres plenty of it. There are great restaurants, some with magnificent views of sunsets and city lights. Cultural events and theater, and plenty of places to hear live music of all kinds, dance and even do a litde karaoke if youre so inclined. Some of these hotspots on the weekend include Sandbar, Green Street, Sky Bar, A Bar Named Sue, Grades, and even the VFW on Tuesdays for beer pong! Nightlife can also indude doing things like night skiing or snowboarding for example. Bowling may be someones idea of a great night out. And going over to someone house to play cards, beer pong or just to party will always be a standby plan. So while Salt Lake City will never be known as a nightlife Mecca, there are plenty of things to do that fit the people who live here. I believe on a warm summers evening, theres no better nightlife than to offer. go Downtown and see what it has to 0 cc 11 1 APRIL 27, 2010 r |
