Show to ruin our democracy. Is it too much of a leap to believe that statement and the actions of the last few days are connected? If this were the only statement from the McCain camp that was disturbing, maybe the article wouldnt have bothered me so much. If the threats of violence were isolated, maybe I would chalk it up to crazies and call it a day. But this is a campaign that has said that Barack Obama pals around with terrorists who kill Americans. They say this despite the fact they know that Bill Ayers never actually killed anyone and Obama doesnt actually hang out with him. (For an excellent analysis of this issue, see http:www.factcheck.orgelections-2008h- e Jedaboutbillayers.html) And yet, Sarah Palin repeats this lie on the campaign trail, using the word terrorist to do nothing less than terrorize. Sarah Palin said in North Carolina that she was proud to speak in the parts of the country. On MSNBC, McCain senior adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer dismissed the polls showing Obama is beating McCain in Virginia, saying the real Virginia . . . will be very responsive to Sen. McCains message. The real Virginia? What do these phrases mean? What purpose do they serve except to drive the wedge of division further in? Joe McCain, the candidates brother, said that Northern Virginia, where polls are not looking good for the GOP, is communist country. He later said it was a joke. But it also communicated a clear message: anyone who disagrees with John McCain must be a communist, an enemy of America. And the list goes on. Enough! Cant we all agree that anyone who has devoted his or her life to serving the country in elected office doesnt hate America? But my real concern isnt Sarah Palin or Nancy Pfotenhauer or even Joe McCain. My real concern is what rallies. Cries of we are seeing happen at McCain-Pali- n terrorist and kill him at the mention of Obamas name. People talking about how Obama is an Arab that hates America and hates white people. I saw footage of one guy who said that Obama is RELATED to a terrorist. Bernie Sanders, the Independent senator from Vermont appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher this ica pro-Amer- Pro-Ameri- ca? weekend and he made an excellent point. If Obama wins in November, there will be a significant group of people who believe that the new President of the United States is a terrorist who hates America. What might an unhinged member of that group do to protect America? John McCain and Sarah Palin know thatBarack Obama is not a terrorist. They know that he does not hate America. And yet, they continue to inflame their crowds with this rhetoric. Will those speeches lead to I hope not. I hope the people who are sending threats to ACORN are just blowhards with technology. I hope the people who think Barack Obama is a terrorist who hates white people and Christians violence? will wake up on November 5th and remember he is a practicing Christian raised by his white mother and her white parents. I hope no one will believe that it is his or her job to save America by ridding us of the menace in the White House. I hope, cf Students speak out What are you going to be for Halloween this year?
