Show Dines continued Continued from page 1 Pornography tells men all women are whores, said Dines. Men are also objectified in pornography and the mass media, said Dines, but not as often or to the same degree. Dines said men pay a different price than women do because of pornography. She said men who view pornography have a difficult time sustaining an erection and ejaculating while being intimate with someone they care about. Men who view pornography dont understand why a woman tells him no because in pornography, there is no such word as no, said Dines. ible. "Pornography is about degradation. If you think pornography is about sex, you're lost." Gail Dines Dines said, Pornography is about degradation. If you think pornography is about sex, youre lost. As described in Dines and Robert Jensons article, Pornography in a Pornographic Culture: Eroticizing Domination and Subordination, women are abused and verbally humiliated in pornography. Dines and Jenson wrote, In virtually all pornography, the men are the sexual subjects, the ones controlling the action and dictating the terms of sex. Women are the sexual objects, whose job is to fulfill the male desire. Women in pornography contort their bodies to perform uncomfortable positions to accommodate male desires. The more hardcore pornography is, the more violence is portrayed. Dines said mainstream pornography used to be considered hardcore. She said now it is difficult to find softcore (less violent and more romantic) pornography on the Internet. But even softcore por- - Forum 0' C't .. Another article by Dines, titled The White Mans Burden: Gonzo Pornography and Construction of Black Masculinity, describes how pornography degrades minorities, too. In interracial pornography, the men are usually black while the women are usually white. The pornography industry feeds off the fact that some white men view black men as more animalistic, wrote Dines. Many white men would indeed like black sex, as in the white racist imagination, as more intriguing and interesting. E-m- ail VOLUME XU: ISSUE 10 Gail Dines and Robert Jenson Dines will show pornographic images during her lecture. She defines pornographic images as images that sexualize and objectify the female body. Most images will be from pop culture, while other images will be from pornographic Web sites. Dines said women dont know what pornography is and the problems it creates until they see it. Women need to see what is happening with the pornography industry so they can do something about it, said Dines. "Many white men would indeed like 'black' sex, as in the white racist imagination, as 'more intriguing and interesting.'" Gail Dines Dines said her lectures get people talking. As many students usually attend. More students are as attending her speeches because they are fed up with all of the pornographic images. Women are tired of feeling like they have to look like models from Maxim, said Dines. Since her lecture is about pornography and pop culture, it applies to everyone. She said even if people dont view pornography, it still affects them. Thats why she encourages students to attend her lectures. 500-1,0- 00 4 |
