Note to students: At the University of Utah, its the students who have to shuttle and the faculty and staff that get to park on campus just a thought when complaining next time about finding a parking spot. Morgan explained that even though the school allows students to park on campus and shuttles the faculty and staff, he still receives complaints from students. Students are frustrated that they have to find parking on campus and they be shuttled like the faculty, he said. Its really a cant situation. Instead of counting down the days till the no-wi- n end of this semester, I find myself counting down the days till that building will be done, said sophomore Erin Miller. It would be an understatement to say that parking has been a pain in everybodys ass. Hlany students dont know we purchase houses for that purpose. We want to buy apart- ments for students to live in so they have every opportunity to live near campus. Steve Morgan True or False: Westminster College is always buying land to one day expand and take over the University of Utah and the world! Uh ... false. Some students may know that over the years Westminster has not only bought property, but also houses and apartments near campus. What students dont generally know, however, is why. The goal is not to buy property near the campus whenever it comes up to build on it. Morgan explained the colleges reasoning. Buying homes around the campus is to control the perimeter, said Morgan. These homes buffer the campus. Morgan said that neigh bors of Westminster dont like living directly behind the student housing, or, not surprisingly, right next to the construction. In these situations when there are angry neighbors, the campus offers to buy the houses so they are able to protect the campus with houses that belong to the college. Additionally, houses are bought near campus to provide housing for students. Many students dont know we purchase houses for that purpose, said Morgan. We want to buy apartments for students to live in so they, have every opportunity to live near campus. Kylie Murikami, a current University of Utah student who considered attending Westminster, said, I was very impressed with Westminster when I learned about student housing around the campus. Although a Ute now, Murikami said, Ill be the first to admit that Westminster is the most beautiful campus in Utah ... and the option to live close by the college without living on the campus was enticing. In addition to purchasing housing for students, Morgan had a simple answer for the overall growth of Westminster. Of course we would like to grow, but it all comes down to money, he said. Westminster at one time had a huge amount of land, but in order to build, the campus had to sell a great deal of it, he said. But the idea is not to be big, but to be a quality school. Im impressed with the changes the college has made, and I like the environment of a smaller school, said junior Chase Lee. The school is a prime example of how bigger is not always better. It is important for Westminster students to know about the advancement of the intrinsically and college TaBiiB WIdi 3a?A2nKj son. But however inconsistent that talk may be, students should know that the college, in every decision it is making, and will make, is looking out for every students best interest something to think, and sigh, about. 7 Winter is finally on its way with snow in the mountains and promises of more storms in the forecast. Just after the first snow fell, people could be seen heading up to the mountains with skis and snowboards strapped to their cars. People could not wait another day to dust off their gear and start hiking in search of the first line of the season. Several Westminster students also wanted to take advantage of the first snow; Scott Hermanski and Dave Stratton were among them. The two hiked above the Wild-ca- t lift at Alta ski resort on Oct. 30. There was only about 15 inches of snow and weeds and rocks were still sticking through, but that did not stop the pair from hiking a couple of different slopes. It was sick said Stratton. We had sparks com ing off skis from hitting the rocks, but it was totally it. worth Even with the minimal snow coverage Hermanski and Stratton were able to ski a couple of different lines. Even though there was not a lot of snow, it was a good chance to get out and get ready for the season. According to the reports, this season should have about the same amount of precipitation as last year, making for another epic winter on the Wasatch Front. $ |
